Volunteer of the Year
This award is established to honor those individuals who, for many years, have served amateur hockey faithfully, having participated as players, coaches and/or as active members of an association. A strong candidate is an individual who has dedicated themself to the ideals of Hockey Canada/Hockey PEI and who has worked tirelessly and has made an outstanding contribution to amateur hockey on PEI.
Volunteer service may include years of participation, administrative contribution or innovation towards the advancement of amateur hockey. The prerequisites for the award is the recipient:
· must be active in the current hockey season;
· must be an amateur hockey volunteer, in any capacity; and
· must be a member in good standing with Hockey PEI.
Administrator of the Year:
The Administrator of the Year Award is presented annually to a hockey volunteer who has demonstrated excellent administrative skills in the game of hockey. The recipient of this award must be a current member of the association/team/league and has made a significant contribution over several years. The ideal candidate would have made significant contributions in such areas as fundraising, tournaments, special events, board/council administration, league development etc.
Female Player of the Year:
This award is presented annually to a deserving female player whom has excelled both on and off-ice the ice. The ideal candidate for this award should demonstrate qualities of hard work, sportsmanship, team commitment and fair play. This award is not merely based on goals and assists, but a combination of the extra attributes that make her a quality player for her team.
Male Player of the Year:
This award is presented annually to a deserving male player whom has excelled both on and off-ice the ice. The ideal candidate for this award should demonstrate qualities of hard work, sportsmanship, team commitment and fair play. This award is not merely based on goals and assists, but a combination of the extra attributes that make him a quality player for his team.
Coach of the Year:
The Coach of the Year Award is awarded to Hockey PEI’s top coach who shows leadership, demonstrates skill development, fair play and has a sound philosophy for the game of hockey. Winning may be considered an asset for this award, but it is certainly not the only and most important one. This award may be presented to a coach from any division at any level.
Team of the Year:
The Team of the Year Award is presented annually to a member team of Hockey PEI at any level. Although team success will be a considering factor for this award, it is not merely based on wins, losses and championships. Teams considered for this award should have demonstrated other qualities such as team sportsmanship and fair play.
Gordie Whitlock Development Award:
Hockey PEI proudly recognizes Gordie Whitlock as a devoted volunteer of the game and for his great contributions in the areas of development. Whitlock has served the sport of hockey for many years in various roles but especially in the areas of developing the game provincially and nationally. Whitlock is an inducted Life Member of Hockey PEI and the 2012 recipient of the Hockey Canada Gordon Juckes Award for his outstanding contributions to the development of amateur hockey in Canada at the National level.
The Gordie Whitlock Development Award is presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to Branch Development Programs and/or provides outstanding volunteer services to their own association by organizing activities, events, clinics that are designed to provide development opportunities for the members of that particular association and/or the branch.
Aaron Coffin Official of the Year Award:
The Official of the Year Award is presented in memory of Aaron Coffin to an individual whom has been involved as an active official and/or served in an administrative role with Hockey PEI in the current season. The individual must exemplify the standards of both Hockey Canada and Hockey PEI Rules and Regulations.
This individual must have also contributed to the game of hockey in ways other than the on-ice requirements and someone who combines leadership and ability both on and off the ice. The ideal candidate should have experience giving back to the officiating program as an instructor, supervisor or mentor.
On April 2, 2014, the PEI hockey community suffered a great loss with the sudden passing of Aaron Coffin while officiating game 2 of the Island Junior Hockey League Junior B Championship series in Montague. Aaron was a dedicated branch official who shared a passion for the game with his fellow officials. At the Hockey PEI 2014 Annual General Meeting, it was declared that the Hockey PEI Official of the Year Award would be renamed in memory of Aaron Coffin.
Clifford Affleck Junior Hockey Award
An award created in 2022 by the Hockey PEI Board of Directors in memory of the late Clifford Affleck, a long- time Hockey PEI official, volunteer, administrator, and former Junior Council Chair is to be presented annually to a deserving junior hockey volunteer on Prince Edward Island.
To qualify for this award, you should be someone who has served junior hockey faithfully, having participated as a coach, and/or active member of an organization/team. A strong candidate is an individual who has dedicated themself to the ideals of Hockey Canada/Hockey PEI and who has worked tirelessly and has made an outstanding contribution to junior hockey on PEI. Volunteer service may include years of participation, administrative contribution, or innovation towards the advancement of junior hockey.
