Girls on outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science (GALS) MI Leader Application
Girls on outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science (GALS) is a free summer science program committed to providing learning opportunities specifically for students who identify as female or gender nonconforming, students of color, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and other groups that are historically excluded from fields of STEM. Founded in 2016 by four women in science, GALS has since been working to bridge this opportunity gap by creating hands-on learning opportunities outside of the traditional classroom setting. All learning happens outdoors through a 2-week backpacking trip in Michigan. While the program's main focus is scientific investigation through experimentation, GALS participants also engage in discussions on a range of related topics from environmentalism and sustainability, to inequality and social justice. As a GALS trip leader, you will guide a group of high school students in the backcountry while leading lessons and activities. You also must be available for two-weekend trainings in April or May, during which you will become familiar with the curriculum and the overall structure of the backpacking trip.
