Renaissance Box (RB) is a competitive and immersive 12-week residency program designed to foster innovative collaboration between artists and STEM professionals from Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Summit, Portage, Geauga, and Lake counties. The residency team typically consists of one artist and one STEM professional, though the review committee may adjust this structure as necessary based on applications.
The program invites applicants to create new projects at the intersection of science and studio art disciplines, providing a unique platform for interdisciplinary exploration. The selection process involves a rotating, impartial jury that reviews applications, interviews finalists, and helps secure additional funding for selected projects. Interviews begin in February, final selections are made by March, and the residency typically commences in late May.
Each residency team receives a $1,000 project stipend to support materials, production costs, research expenses, and other project-related needs during the residency period. This stipend requires receipt tracking and basic expense reporting in accordance with program and funder guidelines. Funds must be used directly in support of the approved project scope. In addition, residents receive 24/7 access to a dedicated studio space for the duration of the residency. Additional project funding may be available through separate grants and sponsorships, which may carry their own reporting requirements. RB staff provide guidance on budgeting, documentation, and pursuing supplemental funding opportunities, as well as technical and production support throughout the residency.
The residency experience is enriched by access to Cleveland’s vibrant STEM and cultural communities, including collaboration opportunities, networking, and participation in events such as IngenuityFest. The culmination of the residency features a public exhibition hosted at an art gallery or Ingenuity Cleveland, alongside presentations by participants in the form of artist talks, panel discussions, or other public programs.
The application deadline is January 1st. Renaissance Box offers a unique opportunity for creative growth and community engagement through the fusion of scientific inquiry and artistic practice.
