Exhibit Title: Art Drawn from Nature
Dates: August 31, 2024 – November 17, 2024
Location: Kalamazoo Nature Center, Glen Vista Gallery
At Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC), we consciously work to connect the Glen Vista Art Gallery thematically to the temporary rotating exhibition on view in the main exhibition hall. On March 23, 2024 KNC welcomed Roots of Wisdom: Native Knowledge. Shared Science, a traveling exhibit from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. In addition, KNC collaborated with the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, to create a feature on Mnomen (wild rice). This section of the exhibit speaks to the cultural significance of Mnomen, the harvesting process and the important role Mnomen plays in local ecosystems. Art Drawn From Nature is a semiannual exhibit featuring local, Southwest Michigan artists. For the first time, this juried exhibition will showcase artwork exclusively by Native American artists, celebrating many forms of art including but not limited to weaving, ceramics, beadwork, sculpture, painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, and mixed media. Artists can submit up to 2 works of art for consideration.
Select representative(s) from the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, will serve as the guest jurors for this exhibit.
