Institutional Aid – General Terms and Conditions
——————————————————————————————————————————
For the purpose of this policy, “Institutional Aid” is defined as any aid in the form of a scholarship, grant, or other aid offered by NewSchool from its institutional funds and is separate and apart from any grant or scholarship offered by an external party. NewSchool maintains exclusive rights over all institutional aid and the terms and conditions associated with same. All students participating in NewSchool institutional aid programs must, without exception, sign an acknowledgment of the General Terms and Conditions for institutional aid at NewSchool before they can be considered for participating in NewSchool institutional aid program. The one-time acknowledgment covers the duration of enrollment at NewSchool and is subject to periodic changes in terms and conditions that will be communicated accordingly by NewSchool.
Submission of an Institutional Aid Application certifies that the applicant has read the General Terms and Conditions and any program-specific terms and conditions and understands and agrees to accept the awarding criteria and terms and conditions associated with institutional aid at NewSchool. The applicant also understands and acknowledges that institutional aid terms and conditions are subject to change and that the Institution reserves the right to discontinue offering any institutional aid offering at any time, subject to appropriate notification and as contained in its annual catalog update. The applicant agrees that all NewSchool institutional aid requires acceptance and enrollment in a degree-seeking program at NewSchool. Students enrolled as non-degree-seeking students are ineligible to participate in NewSchool institutional aid programs.
Full-Time Enrollment:
Full-time enrollment is generally required for all institutional aid from NewSchool unless otherwise stated. Full-time enrollment is defined as 12 credits or more each quarter. The student must have the required full-time enrollment to qualify for institutional aid. Enrollment of less than 12 credits in any quarter may result in the reduction or loss of some aid program funds. Additionally, repeat classes and classes not associated with the student’s degree program do not count toward the required minimum credits.
Enrollment Changes:
Students are required to notify the Office of Financial Aid of periods of less-than-full-time enrollment, periods of non-enrollment, candidacy for graduation, and other plans that may affect expected enrollment during the time covered by their award. Failure to notify the office within the appropriate time frame could negatively impact the award or create an over award if the student has received 100% of awarded funds based on full-time enrollment or other eligibility requirements.
The Bursar’s Office and the Office of Financial Aid reserve the right on behalf of NewSchool to review and cancel any institutional aid award at any time because of changes in financial need, academic status, enrollment status, academic history, academic program, graduation, or program funding.
Renewal:
Some institutional scholarships and aid are renewable annually if the student meets the eligibility requirements. However, there is no guarantee that institutional aid will be renewed in whole or in part in any future award/academic year, as the institution reserves the right to discontinue any institutional aid offering. Unless otherwise communicated, acceptance of any renewal of a previously awarded institutional aid award will be based upon the terms and conditions contained in the most recent institution catalog, which is subject to revision from time to time. The student is responsible for reading the catalog and acquainting themselves with any changes in award terms and conditions. No notification of said change is required beyond what is contained in the catalog.
To be eligible for institutional aid renewal in a future award/academic year, a student must:
- Submit all required documentation to the Financial Aid office that would allow an eligibility determination to be made. As aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, in the case of limited funding availability, renewal priority will be determined by the submission date and the completion date of all financial aid documentation.
- Have enough need for institutional aid as determined by the NewSchool.
- Meet all of the conditions of the specific institutional aid program.
Award Specific Terms and Conditions:
Certain programs may require students to meet specific eligibility requirements. The institutional aid will be withdrawn if a student is deemed ineligible due to failure to meet certain eligibility requirements, and any future disbursements will be forfeited. Restrictions concerning specific programs should be reviewed by consulting with the Office of Financial Aid or the NewSchool catalog. Terms and conditions associated with certain awards are listed on the award letter as well as notifications from the Office of Financial Aid in addition to whatever application platform is utilized by NewSchool. Acceptance of these terms and conditions includes acknowledgment of terms and conditions linked to specific programs.
Continuous Enrollment:
NewSchool institutional aid is offered on the condition of continuous enrollment until graduation. Students who withdraw from the Institution prior to graduating will be deemed ineligible to participate in all institutional aid programs at NewSchool in any future term after returning to active enrollment. Withdrawal shall be defined as an official withdrawal or a withdrawal due to nonattendance in any quarter (including Summer Term) prior to the last term of study per students’ academic program as shown in the most recent institution catalog and where the student enrollment status is NOT listed as Active by the office of the Registrar at NewSchool.
Census Finalization:
NewSchool institutional aid may be initially disbursed for a specific term at the time of enrollment but is subject to validation of enrollment eligibility. If a student is deemed not to meet the eligibility requirements of the specific institutional award during census validation, the award is subject to revision or cancellation as terms and conditions permit, and a student then becomes liable for any balance created by changes made to the award during this validation process.
Stacking:
Unless expressly stated, students are NOT eligible for multiple institutional aid awards within the same term, award/academic year.
Documentation Request:
Requested documents must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid within the timeframe communicated or the program's application submission deadline.
Other General Terms and Conditions:
Eligibility for institutional aid requires the student to maintain NewSchool's Satisfactory Academic Progress policy standards as contained in the most recent academic catalog covering the award year in which the funds were awarded.
The student must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at NewSchool to receive institutional aid. Only coursework required for the student’s degree will count as part of financial aid enrollment status each quarter, and repeat classes do not count towards meeting the enrollment level.
Institutional aid award amounts are generally made per year, split evenly between the quarters identified on the award.
If a student totally withdraws for the quarter, the student will keep the institutional aid as long as there is no refund generated from the withdrawal. If a credit balance is created due to the withdrawal, the Office of Financial Aid will adjust the institutional aid so there is no refund of institutional aid.
In the case where there is a dispute as to the institutional aid covered by this policy, the student agrees that the final authority rests with the President of the NewSchool of Architecture and Design, and in submitting this application and accepting any institutional aid award, it is agreed that the decision of the University President in interpreting these terms and conditions is final and not subject to any additional adjudication.
Submission of an application for the NewSchool institutional aid program does not in any way guarantee that an award will be made to any student, as the Institution reserves the right to make any and all awards available as it sees fit, subject to the published general and program specific terms and conditions. Funding, availability, and other criteria are at the sole discretion of NewSchool and can affect the availability of any published institutional aid award. The decision of NewSchool is final in determining which awards to make available.
The student understands that applying for, being awarded, or any decision rendered relative to an institutional aid award does not in any way affect a student needing to meet admission and enrollment criteria at NewSchool. A new student must otherwise meet all admissions requirements for enrollment at NewSchool, and a continuing student must also meet all enrollment requirements for continuing studies at NewSchool. The awarding of institutional aid program funds does not constitute acceptance to NewSchool.
Financial Counseling:
All institutional aid awards are given on the condition that the student completes a financial counseling workshop each award year in the first quarter of the award being granted and to coincide with the expiration of the current term of the award. This workshop is required each year for renewable institutional aid.
