Artists’ Attic Membership Expectations
Studio rent is due on or before the first of every month. Studio members must agree to automatic transfer of rent payments from their account to Artists’ Attic’s account. It is important this is paid on time as we operate on a minimal cash reserve to cover unpaid rents. Rents are transferred to the Square by the sixth day of the month. There is a twenty-five-dollar late fee after the fifth of the month and an additional five-dollar fee for every five days after the fifth.
A deposit of one month’s rent is payable at the beginning of studio rental and held in escrow. The escrow is refundable with thirty-days’ notice to vacate and if the studio is left in the original condition and all rent owed is paid. Place escrow or rent check in box on the door of the kitchen, pay by credit using the Attic’s Square charge and add a $5.00 service fee or mail to:
Artists’ Attic, Inc.
401 W. Main St. Suite 401
Lexington, KY 40507
The Attic’s operations cost is supported by the membership, fees from classes and workshops and commission from gallery sales. There may be a yearly studio member's fee or assessment as approved by the membership as needed to meet budget requirements.
All studio members are expected to learn to use the credit card charge to facilitate purchases of any member and gallery artists’ work by using the Square located in the kitchen. Artists’ Attic’s invoice records should be fully completed by the selling artists.
Members may be reimbursed by the 5th of the following month for operational expenses with advance approval of the President or Treasurer. Email invoices to the President or Treasurer promptly.
The Attic elevator will be unlocked only when two members are present who are willing to greet guests. All members are responsible for their personal safety, the security of studios, artworks and galleries. There is a binder in the kitchen/office with operational procedures, including fire and security issues.
Each artist has a key to their studio and the stairway. Extra keys to each studio are kept in the locked box in the kitchen and need to stay there. Studio and other keys in the lock box should only be accessed and used by studio members. Classes and workshops lead by non-studio members must have a studio member willing to open, close and be present for operations.
Members are encouraged to be in their studios as much as feasible. Obviously illness, travel and other circumstances may cause an absence from time to time.
The Attic has no paid staff. Some members take on administrative and operational duties that may be considered as a part of their studio time commitment. However, we operate as a member collective to keep our gallery and studios open to the public and must have active producing artists in our studios as much and as regularly as possible.
Members are expected to work at least one four-hour weekend shift a month, either 12-4 on Friday or Saturday. Online sign up for gallery duty is on Google Calendar. (Bre Kort can assist you in this process if necessary). If you don't sign up, you may be assigned a time. If unable to work your shift, you are responsible for finding a replacement.
Studios should be opened and left open while the gallery is supervised unless the member objects and posts that objection on the list near the key box. Supervising members are not responsible for any loss. There is a locked file cabinet in studio S (storage room) and a key marked file cabinet is in the key box for any member's use.
If a studio is shared, one member needs to be designated as the responsible party for the rent but both members must be juried and sign the membership agreement.
Have shades up during gallery business hours so that your artwork is visible. If you want to work undisturbed, close your door or window and hope others will respect---- but at least two members must be willing to interact with the public and supervise the gallery when the Attic is open to the public.
Please respect the conditions posted at utility sinks regarding proper disposal of liquids, solvent, brush washing and trash disposal. We are responsible for plumbing repairs; the plumbing is old and we must be environmentally responsible. Members are also responsible for disposing of their own solid waste products either utilizing the Square’s trash facilities or by taking home.
The first two people in are responsible for putting the sign out. The last person out is responsible for bringing in the sign and turning off all lights. The fluorescents are turned on at the wall to the right of the elevator. Spotlights are turned off at the breaker box in the closet by the phone. The four breakers are marked with red dots.
Each member is required to serve on a rotating committee for Gallery Hop all members are expected to serve on committees for policy, procedures and operations.
For any maintenance issues, please contact the designated member to get the work order placed. Do not approach building staff directly.
Each member is expected to act in good faith, on an informed basis and in the best interest of the Attic.
