Objectives
At the conclusion of this conference, the participant should be able to:• Understand the risks and role of appropriate pain management options for injured adolescents both pre and post-operative / injury • Discuss adjuvant therapeutics for orthopedic injuries • Describe medical cannabis use in Mississippi • Review basic issues with substance use disorders • Understand potential risks of medical cannabis use and relapse prevention • Understand the opponent process theory • Discover opioid induced hyperalgesia • Understand the evolution of pain theory • Discuss preoperative assessment in patients with Substance Abuse Disorder • Discuss proper use of MOUDS in the perioperative period• Discuss intraoperative techniques to reduce opioid requirements. • Understand ways to differentiate between SUDs and SMI • Evaluate how co-morbid SUDs and SMI affect risk factors for suicide and violence• Develop a framework for planning treatment of patients with both SUDs and SMI • List the difference between full agonist and partial agonist. • Understand the ceiling effect of buprenorphine and the mechanism of precipitated withdrawal. • Explain the utility of buprenorphine in the treatment of somatic pain. • Explain the registration process and use of the PMP• Review and discuss data trends• Discuss the importance of the PMP• Reduce stigmatization of individuals with Substance Use Disorder• Discuss proper referral to a community-based or private Substance Use Treatment Provider • Support the acceptance and practice of SBIRT • Identify appropriate patients for opioids • Explain how to initiate opioids • Describe how to monitor opioid use
