Radiant G Circle is Girls Empowerment Network’s weekly recurring school-based program. We serve girls in 3-12 grade in Central Texas, Houston, and Dallas. Our programs offer a safe and supportive environment for youth.
Once a week, Radiant G Circle volunteers will help facilitate interactive sessions which incorporate a research-based curriculum designed exclusively for Girls Empowerment Network. Each week we focus on a topic relevant to girl’s lives, such as healthy friendships, self-compassion, stress management, body positivity, identity/diversity, etc. With support from Girls Empowerment Network Program Coordinator, volunteers, and peers, Radiant G Circle equips girls with the skills and awareness they need to navigate the pressures of girlhood.
As a Radiant G Circle volunteer, you can choose to be involved in either of the following ways, though the timing of groups may vary each semester.
- Co-facilitate a weekly school group that takes place during the school day (between 8AM-3PM) and last for 1½ hours.
- Co-facilitate a weekly after school group that takes place between the hours of 3PM – 5:45PM and lasts for 2 hours.
Volunteers are assigned to a specific school and will be required to commit to the same time and day every week for the entirety of the semester.
Your Role as a Volunteer:
- Attend a weekly group meeting at a local elementary, middle, or high school. We aim to keep travel time for volunteers to their groups within a 20-30 minute range. However, please note the majority of our groups are located at Title 1 schools and therefore are located in the following locations.
-
Central Texas/Austin: South Austin, North Austin, Buda, Lockhart, Manor, Del Valle, San Marcos, Georgetown, Hays County, etc.
-
Houston: Houston ISD, Alief ISD, Aldine ISD. We serve campuses broadly in South Houston and East Houston (north and southeast).
-
Dallas: Cedar Hill ISD, North Dallas, South Dallas (Fair Park Area), and Southeast Dallas (Pleasant Grove).
- Act as a co-facilitator alongside a Girls Empowerment Network Program Lead. All programs are led by a Girls Empowerment Network staff member or social work intern and co-facilitated by a trained volunteer like yourself. This ensures that volunteers have a system of support and are able to work with an awesome team.
- Form encouraging and caring relationships with girls in the group.
- Lead ice breakers, activities, and discussions, as well as participate in activities with girls. When girls are on the floor making stress balls, you’re on the floor with them!
- Assist with behavior management/refer to group guidelines.
Expectations of Volunteers:
- Be energentic and present
- Greet girls and help lead them to the meeting space
- Lead small groups
- Engage girls in processing the activities/discussions, how they feel about it, how it realtes to their lives
- Partcipate!
- Aid girls that have additional needs/benefit from extra support
Other Important Information:
- We ask that volunteers only miss two groups a semester. Consistency is incredibly important, but we also know that volunteers have obligations outside of Radiant G Circle! So, no worries if you need to miss a few groups- all you must do is let us know in advance so we can get a sub!
- All Radiant G Circle Volunteer are required to attend a virtual Direct Service Training and to complete a secure online background check. Our virtual trainings are usually held in August or September for the Fall semester and in January or February for the Spring.
- While we strive to place all volunteer who attend training into a group within the same semester, the variability of school schedules, group availability, and campus locations means this isn't always possible. However, attending training ensures that you are eligible to support Radiant G Circle at any time in the future and allows you to participate as a co-facilitator of high-impact workshops on school campsuses throughout the semester.
- We anticipate that Fall semester programming will being in September/early October. We anticipate that Spring semester programming will begin in late January/February.
