Rangi Ruru Girls’ School offers scholarship opportunities to highly motivated ākonga entering with abilities across many areas of life.
These areas include Academic, Music, Sport, Leadership and Cultural contributions and talents. To be considered for these prestigious scholarships, ākonga must be willing to contribute and participate fully in the life of Rangi Ruru, upholding our values and embracing our spirit. These sought-after opportunities are for ākonga entering Year 9 in 2026.
Applicants must be New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents and currently in Year 8 to be eligible to sit for the Year 9, 2026 Scholarship examination.
Our scholarship recipients are not only given financial support to attend Rangi Ruru, they are also immersed in programmes that ensure they reach their full potential.
Scholarships are for a portion of tuition fees, depending on the calibre and circumstances of the ākonga. All Scholarships are available for five years tuition, subject to continued academic progress, application, school involvement and adherence to school values. In the case of the Stellar Music Scholarship, continued full involvement in school music is a requirement over the five-year scholarship tenure.
Academic Scholarships
The number and value of these scholarships is determined on an annual basis. Ākonga must demonstrate academic performance in our Scholarship Entrance Examination. High performance in other academic competitions may be taken into consideration These scholarships are offered for five years.
Widesky Scholarships
Ākonga must demonstrate a high level of achievement and participation in two or more of our four identified areas: academic, leadership, sport, cultural. These scholarships are offered for five years. If an applicant has a special strength in music as part of the Cultural component, please note this on the application form and be prepared to attend an audition if required.
Stellar Music Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded for excellence and outstanding potential in Music, with the number and value of these scholarships being determined on an annual basis. It is anticipated that applicants shortlisted for an audition will have achieved a minimum of Grade 5/6 level or equivalent performance experience in their main instrument/voice. After application, those short listed are invited to attend an audition lasting approximately 20 minutes. The audition will consist of a short performance of two contrasting pieces, aural tests, sight reading and a brief discussion on the music performed/applicant involvement in music.
Shortlisted applicants must provide an accompanist at their cost or may use a backing track if appropriate. Further details will be given to those shortlisted. These scholarships are offered for five years.
Rangi Ruru Boarding Scholarship
For a Year 9 entering Boarding, awarded for five years at a value of $5000.00 per annum. An ākonga who shows dedication to academic study and all-round abilities.
Rangi Ruru Old Girls' Association (RROGA) Scholarship
For a Year 9 who is a daughter or granddaughter of an Old Girl, awarded for two years at a value of $5000.00 per annum. An ākonga who shows dedication to academic study and all-round abilities.
General Information
The examinations will be held at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School on Wednesday 21 May with ākonga required to be at the school by 1.15pm. The examinations consist of tests in English, Mathematics, Reasoning and Creativity of a standard that can be reasonably attempted by very academically able ākonga in Year 8. (Each test lasts approximately 40 minutes).
All ākonga are required to sit the Academic examination regardless of the Scholarship they are applying for.
Full details of the examination day will be sent following receipt of the registration form and once registrations have closed on Friday 9 May at 4.00pm.
Note: If your daughter is on our pre-enrolment list for entry it is still necessary to complete and return the Scholarship application form.
Sample papers from previous examinations are not available.
Those shortlisted for Stellar Music Scholarship auditions will be contacted regarding their audition time. These auditions will be held on Tuesday 3 June in the Performing Arts Building at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.
Costs
A $150 application fee is required for ākonga to sit scholarship. Those who have already submitted a General Application for enrolment, do not have to pay an additional fee. Ākonga whose mother was an Old Girl of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School are exempt from this fee. Our Fees
• Current tuition fees for Years 9 2025 are (inclusive of GST) – Day Ākonga - $30,300 per annum (for New Zealand ākonga)
• Boarding fees 2025 (where applicable) - $19,200 per annum
• Incidentals including uniform, stationery, class trips etc approximately
$3,000 per annum
Scholarship Offers and Results
Following the Scholarship examinations, an email confirming the process from here onwards will be sent to all ākonga who sat the Scholarship exam. The final process can take two to three weeks. Final outcomes will be notified by 13 June 2025.
Actual marks attained in the examinations remain the property of the school and are not released to applicants. Acceptance of this proviso is a condition of the candidate’s entry and registration for the examinations. Examination answer papers are not available.
Tenure of the Scholarship will be reviewed annually and is subject to good conduct, adherence to the Rangi values and academic progress in keeping with the status of the award.
