    • Day 1-
    • Day 1: Ft. Lauderdale - Bogota
Arrive at your leisure (on your own) and take the free shuttle provided by Aloft Hotel, which will be waiting to take you to the hotel. The hotel has a restaurant and there are also places to eat in the neighborhood.
Overnight at Alofts Hotel or similar.

    • Day 2-
    • Bogota- Macarena
After breakfast, board the hotel shuttle and arrive early at the airport to catch your flight to Macarena. Your guide and other travelers will be coming from Medellin to join you. Arrive in Macarena and enjoy a reception by the local hosts and guides.
Then, we will board boats for a tour of the “Canos Cristalitos,” known as the Crystal Channel. It is a tributary of the  Guayabero River, a part of the Orinoco basin. It is a smaller version of Cano Cristales, the river of five colors. The river is called the & River of Five Colors or
the "Liquid Rainbow" and is noted for its striking colors. The river's bed from the end of July through November is variously colored yellow, green, blue, black, and especially red, the last caused
by  Rhyncholacis clavigera (syn. Macarenia clavigera) plants on the river’s bed. Then, return to our hotel and enjoy dinner and photos of the day’s events. (B,L,D)

    • Day 3-
    • Day 3 –Macarena
After breakfast, we will venture up the Guayabero River by boat. Enjoy seeing monkeys, pink dolphins, crocodiles, turtles, and rare birds. We will arrive at the Serrania de la Macarena National Park. This is home to the famous Canos Cristales. We will take an incredible hike to view the majestic seven-color river. Caño Cristales was founded in 1969 by a group of cattle farmers. Caño Cristales is a fast-flowing river with many rapids and waterfalls. Small circular pits, known as “giant kettles,” can be found in many parts of the riverbed, which have been formed by pebbles or chunks of harder rocks. Once one
of these more complicated rock fragments falls into one of the cavities, it is rotated by the water current and begins
to carve at the cavity wall, increasing the pit's dimensions. Enjoy a dip in one of these unique pools.
Lunch will be picnic style. After hiking and an exciting adventure, return to the hotel for a relaxing
      dinner. (B,L,D)

    • Day 4 -
    • Day 4 - Macarena - After breakfast, we will board our boats for an extended trip along the Amazon River to hopefully see the pink dolphins along with monkeys and rare birds. We will stop to hike to rare “rock art hieroglyphics" and learn about the native people. Head back to the village to have a little time to visit the local markets. (B,L,D)

    • Day 5 -
    • Day 5: Macarena - Bogota
Experience dawn, known as llanero sunrise, at a remote spot before breakfast at the hotel. We will then check out and fly back to Bogota. After landing, we will board transportation and head to the magnificent  José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden. It is Colombia's most significant botanical garden, massive and well-maintained with various sections, including an exhibit of 5,000 indigenous orchids. It features plants from every Colombian altitude, climate and region. It was founded in 1955 in honor of botanist and astronomer José Celestino Mutis. We will include lunch at their café. Then, check in to our hotel, Windsor House, relax, and have dinner on your own. (B, L))

    • Day 6 -
    • Day 6: Bogota
After breakfast, we will head to the famous Salt Cathedral. The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Spanish: Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá) is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 meters underground in a Halite mountain. It is a very popular tourist destination and place of
pilgrimage in the country. The name "Salt Cathedral" is mostly to attract tourists! It is a functioning church that receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays, but it has no bishop and, therefore, no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism. The temple at the bottom has three sections, representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus. The icons, ornaments and architectural details are hand carved in the halite rock. Some marble sculptures are included. The Salt Cathedral is considered one of the most notable achievements of Colombian architecture. Also, it has been nominated as a "Jewel of Modern Architecture." The cathedral represents for the Colombian people a valuable cultural, environmental and religious piece of patrimony. The cathedral is part of a larger complex, including "Parque de la Salt."
(Salt Park), and a Museum of mining, mineralogy, geology, and natural resources. Francisco, the oldest surviving church in Bogota, was built in 1556. We will then venture to the UNESCO Old City for a quick Cololmbina snack. Next, stop at the Botero Museum, where there are great shops and cafes where you can try empanadas and other local treats on your own. We will then enter the world-famous Gold Museum, which will dazzle you. See more than 34,000 pieces of gold, the most extensive collection of pre-Hispanic goldwork in the entire world. Then, our adventure continues with another surprise before having dinner to watch the sunset and transformation into the twinkling lights of Bogota. Overnight at the Hotel (B, D)

    • Day 6 -
    • Day 7: Bogota
After breakfast, we say goodbye and head to the airport for our flight home or our next trip! (B)

  • Andes Cloud Forest

A sixth of the world’s biodiversity – 2 million species of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms – can be found in the region’s cloud forests.
The cloud forests of Colombia are a story of isolation and biodiversity, climate change and survival. Over 300,000 species of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms – can be found in the region. Remarkably, only about 10 percent have been identified.
The mist enveloping these montane cloud forests when warm air meets chillier mountain currents creates conditions for life. In particular, the climate is ideal for orchids, palms, ferns, and epiphytes. Over 200 species of orchids have already been found and cataloged here.
The steep terrain isolates species, fostering a high degree of endemism. As a result, species with small ranges concentrate here, as they do in neighboring Ecuador and Peru.  Located at the intersection of North and South America, the Colombian Western Andes is home to species from both continents.

  • Who we are

TREE Institute International is a volunteer-operated, non-profit, charitable organization (501-c-3) that organizes and showcases adventure, cultural, education, and conference trips to places where TREE conducts the work of its mission, including Cuba, Colombia and Argentina. TREE has been taking group trips to Cuba for over 20 years. The TREE Institute holds an OFAC license issued by the US Treasury Department, allowing the organization to legally offer and oversee trips to Cuba. Upcoming trips are licensed and fully compliant with the new OFAC Regulations and meet all current travel requirements.

    What we do

The funds from our trips support projects in countries that US foundations do not fund. TREE is currently working with the Medellin Botanical Garden and the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia, to study, propagate and create educational exhibits on the new plant species discovered in the Andes region. There is also medicinal research in Bogota with Colombian scientists on Burgmansia or Angel's tAngel's The species Brugmansia arborea, golden angel's tangel's (B. aurea), B. insignis, red angel's tangel's (B. sanguinea), B. versicolor, and B. vulcanicola were variously distributed in the Andes region of South America, ranging from Colombia to northern  Chile.
For more information on our projects, visit https://treeinstitute. org/our-projects/

We are all volunteers, and TREE spends no money on marketing or advertising our journeys. Most trips are filled with repeat participants, word of mouth, and referrals!
