    Online Open House #2
  • This online open house is now closed. The content is still available for viewing, but no longer accepting submissions. Thank you for your feedback!

  • Welcome

  • The City of Washougal is planning to replace Fire Station 43, remodel the nearby police station and co-locate the facilities.

  • This online open house includes the following pages:

    • Project Overview
    • What We Have Heard So Far
    • Existing Conditions, Site Plan, and Floor Plan
    • Preferred Exterior Design, Images and Materials
    • Cost Estimate and Bond Information
    • Next Steps and Timeline

  • Go directly to a page using the buttons above or use the "Next" button below to move through the pages in order. Be sure to click or tap “Submit” on the last page.

  • Project Overview

  • Fire Station 43 has outlived its useful life. We can't modify it to meet the needs required of a modern fire station. Its long-term maintenance would cost more than replacing the building. Washougal needs a new station to ensure adequate fire and emergency medical services as the city grows.

  • Current Camas-Washougal Fire and Police Station

  • More specifically, the current building:

    • Frequently floods with stormwater, so firefighters use sandbags year-round to block some of it. Structural damage has occurred from flooding over the years.
    • Intermittently has sewage backups.
    • Doesn’t have a dedicated space for decontaminating clothing and gear after responding to a fire — which risks firefighters’ health and safety due to carcinogen exposure.
    • Lacks an exhaust system for fire engines to maintain healthy air quality.
    • Would not withstand a significant earthquake.
    • Lacks space for additional firefighters/EMS personnel to meet growing demands.
    • Lacks mandated safety clearances around equipment.
    • Lacks facilities for a diverse workforce (male/female changing rooms) to be consistent with diversity, equity and inclusion guidelines.
    • Lacks private medical screening and treatment area for walk-ins and drive-ins.

The building also doesn’t meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for public access and lacks a public restroom.

  • What We Have Heard So Far

  • We held our first open house on Feb. 22. We introduced options for exterior design and our initial site and floor plans. We heard that the community wants:

    • A modern look that reflects local and regional aesthetics.
    • A clearly indicated entrance for community access.
    • Access to natural light inside the building.

  • Existing Conditions, Site Plan, and Floor Plan

  • Existing Conditions

  • Below: This image shows the existing site layout with proposed improvements.

  • Site Plan

  • The site plan removes the existing Fire Station 43 building and replaces it with an expanded facility and combined resources with the existing Washougal Police Facility next door.

Below: The proposed site plan creates an entryway for fire engines to easily enter and exit the bay, and adds parking spaces for community members. It also ensures the future building won’t have drainage issues.

  • Floor Plan

  • The updated floor plan connects the fire station with the police station and combines the facility with shared fitness rooms, shower rooms, classrooms, conference rooms and kitchen.

This new facility ensures enough capacity for the number of police officers and fighters now and the higher number our community will need in the future.

Below: The proposed floor plan improves sidewalk and street access to the fire station, adds staff and community parking spaces, and relocates the cell tower.

  • Cost Estimate and Bond Information

  • The estimated cost of the project is $15.7 million, to be financed through a bond measure that Washougal voters will consider in August.

The bond will add $9.23 per month in excess levy (extra property tax) for an owner of a home matching Washougal’s median property value.

    More bond data:

    • Term: 25 years
    • Interest rate: about 4.5%
    • Excess levy rate: $0.19 per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value ($0.1766 for fire, $0.0134 for police)
  • Next Steps and Timeline

  • Thank you for participating.

Your feedback will help us finish the facility design.

Funding depends on the sale of voter-approved bonds expected to be on the August 6 ballot. If the bond measure passes, we'll plan construction and start it soon after.
