  • Key Details About The LIFEbeat Context:

    • We will live in a diverse intergenerational community of around 80 people, (c.30 supportive adults and 50 young people).
    • Young people will be in shared accommodation (usually tents shared with other young people) and living in community, so time alone and personal space will be limited.
    • Camps take place in beautiful environments with lots of nature nearby & time outdoors.
    • Our programme involves structured opportunities to connect and share personal stories from your life.
    • Our days are structured and busy, with activities from 9.30am until 10pm, and 3 hours free time every afternoon, when young people choose how they spend their time.
    • Living in a community of 80 people for a week can be really vibrant and exciting and for some, can, at times, feel noisy or overstimulating. We will make provision to support where possible.
    • We have an Unplugged Culture at LIFEbeat- where young people can only access their phone during free time if they choose to (approx. 3 hrs in the afternoon).
  • Additional Support Needs

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are "highly stressful, and potentially traumatic, events or situations that occur during childhood and/or adolescence. They can be a single event, or prolonged threats to, and breaches of, the young person’s safety, security, trust or bodily integrity.” (Young Minds, 2018).

  • Personal Reflection and Storytelling

During our programme, we introduce structured reflection practices which invite young people to share and explore their stories, if they choose to. In the middle of the week, there is an evening activity called the Heart Circle- where the young people and adults gather as a whole community to hold a supportive sharing circle.

Young people are invited to share a personal story which will help them step more fully into their lives and they are encouraged to focus on a story which describes overcoming a challenge in their lives. There is no expectation to share, and young people choose whether to speak.  We encourage compassionate listening and respect from the whole community and there is no cross-sharing. The majority of young people benefit from this opportunity to be authentic and to connect with their peers as a profoundly healing activity. It is important to note with referrals that stories are heartfelt and authentic which can occasionally be triggering for a young person who has lived through challenging times. We have support available in this case and a mental health lead on hand for the duration of camp. In exceptional circumstances it may be decided that the process is unsuitable for a young person attending camp.  In this case alternative provision of care will be made available.
