ConeTech Archival Matte Paper is a smooth, neutral-white, matte paper for high-quality fine art and photo reproduction. It features a heavy weight (230 gsm), thick base (10 mil). It is an alpha-cellulose paper that prints exceptionally well because of its tight formation and offers an opportunity for printing at a much lower cost. It’s drawback is that it does not have the same in hand feel as a cotton based paper. Frame it and it’s exceptional. It is our smoothest sheet. It has been produced in sheets of 24” x 36” so it never has a curl that requires lengthy uncurling. It does limit printing to 24x36 or smalller.
Somerset® for Cone was produced exclusively for the studio in early 1990s at the original St .Cuthbert’s Mill in Somerset, UK. St .Cuthbert’s has been making fine printmaking papers since the 1700s. Somerset for Cone is 100% cotton, acid-free, and with a coating originally designed for pigment inks. Cone Editions developed the first fine art pigment ink set years before EPSON. This vintage sheet also offers an economical advantage because it is produced at 230gsm, and is coated on both sides offering the potential for dual-sided printing. It is lighter than papers from Canson and Hahnemühle, but no less archival or premium. Best of all, it was produced in sheets of 24” x 36” so it never has a curl that requires lengthy uncurling. It does limit printing to 24x36 or smalller.
JonCone Studio Type 2 paper was produced at small mill in France. This vintage paper ceased production during Covid. Type 2 is a natural white, smooth paper surface made from 100% rag (cotton) coated on one side with an excellent pH neutral inkjet receptor coating. The paper is both acid-free and lignin-free for exceptional long life. This sheet does not use optical brighteners. The weight of this sheet is 310 gsm. It is was developed originally to make a high dMax paper for Piezography inks. It is one of our best printing papers and very effective with ConeColor inks as well. Type 2 is very similar in surface structure to Hahnemühle Photo Rag, but Type 2 has a natural white color (slightly warm).
JonCone Studio Type 5 paper was also produced at a small mill in France. We discontinued it during Covid and kept the last shipment of this desirable paper for the studio. Type 5 has a warm white, f-type glossy ultra-smooth surface. It is made from 100% rag (cotton) coated on side with an excellent inkjet receptor coating. The paper is both acid-free and lignin-free for exceptional long life. This sheet does not use optical brighteners. The weight of this sheet is 290gsm. This paper was developed by Cone Editions Press for printing "air dried" glossy look fine color and black & white prints reminiscent of an air-dried fiber base paper traditionally used in the darkroom. One of the unique features of this sheet is that like a true baryta paper, it is coated on only one side. It is one of the few glossy or baryta papers on the market that you can sign on the verso with a pencil.
Besides the four exclusive vintage sheets above. Cone Editions feature many different Hahnemuhle and Canson fine digital papers that are well known.
