Support an emerging artist

As a young artist, it can be quite a task to break open the door into the professional sector. Many people fall into a gap after their art education and never make it into the art field. For self-made artists without a diploma the challenge is even bigger.. A network, subsidies, fair opportunities, cheap workspace, status as an artist: how do you do it??

In Pairing is Caring we match an ‘emerging’ artist with a more experienced one or a cultural worker so that knowledge on how to set up your career as an artist can be exchanged. This support person can then help them from time to time with their individual questions concerning new contacts, subsidies, remuneration, space, next steps in their career... 

Together, you will decide how and under what conditions you want to organise this exchange. On this matching day, you will meet a few young, emerging and freshly graduated artists in your discipline, have a short talk and will then be matched with an artist in need of support!

The matching event will take place on October 11th at De Markten from 14h to 17h.

We focus on the disciplines of theater, performance, visual & media arts and multi-disciplinary practices. Because we can only host as many artists as there are support figures, we ask everyone to fill out a registration form. So every interested experienced artist or cultural worker counts.

This is a call for solidarity in the art field and thus we ask that you can offer your time for free.

NL//Ondersteun een opkomende kunstenaar

Als een jonge kunstenaar kan het een hele opdracht zijn om de deur in de professionele sector in te stampen. Velen vallen dan ook door de mazen van het net na hun kunstopleiding en geraken nooit in het kunstenveld. Voor autodidacten zonder een diploma is deze uitdaging nog groter. Een netwerk, subsidies, eerlijke kansen, een betaalbaar atelier, kunstenaarstatuut: hoe doe je het?? 

In Pairing is Caring zetten we een opkomende kunstenaar samen met een meer ervarene of een cultuurwerker om zo kennis over de start van een kunstenaarscarrière uit te wisselen. Deze persoon zal vervolgens gedurende een bepaalde tijd als ondersteuning blijven optreden bij individuele vragen over nieuwe contacten, subsidies, remuneratie, ruimte en volgende stappen in je carrièrepad...

Jullie zullen samen beslissen hoe en onder welke omstandigheden jullie deze uitwisseling willen organiseren. Op de matchingdag ontmoet je tevens andere jonge, opkomende en net afgestudeerde kunstenaars in jouw discipline en is er de ruimte voor gesprekjes waarna je gepaard wordt met een kunstenaar met nood aan ondersteuning!

Het Matching event vindt plaats op 11 oktober in De Markten van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur.

We focussen op de disciplines van theater, performance, visuele & mediale kunsten en multidisciplinaire praktijken. Aangezien we slechts evenveel kunstenaars kunnen ontvangen als er ondersteunende personen zijn, vragen we iedereen om een registratieformulier in te vullen. Dus elke geïnteresseerde kunstenaar of cultuurwerker telt. 

Dit is een oproep tot solidariteit in het kunstenveld en vragen daarom dat je je tijd gratis kan schenken zonder betaling.

En tant que jeune artiste, il peut être assez difficile de se frayer un chemin dans le secteur professionnel. Beaucoup de personnes se retrouvent dans une impasse après leurs études artistiques et n'arrivent jamais à entrer dans "les mondes de l'art". Pour les artistes autodidactes sans diplôme, le défi est encore plus grand. Un réseau, des subventions, des opportunités équitables, un espace de travail abordable, le statut d'artiste : comment tu fais ??

Avec Pairing is Caring, nous mettons en relation un·e artiste "émergent·e" avec un·e autre plus expérimenté·e ou un·e travailleur·euse culturel·le afin que les connaissances sur la manière de mettre en place une carrière artistique puissent être échangées. Cette personne de soutien peut alors les aider de temps en temps avec leurs questions individuelles concernant de nouveaux contacts, des subventions, une rémunération, un espace, les prochaines étapes de leur carrière...

Ensemble, vous déciderez comment et dans quelles conditions vous souhaitez organiser cet échange. Lors de cette journée de mise en relation, vous rencontrerez quelques jeunes, émergent·e·s et diplômé·e·s fraîchement sorti·e·s des études artistiques dans votre discipline. Vous aurez une courte discussion, puis serez mis·e en relation avec un·e artiste ayant besoin de soutien !

Le matching event aura lieu le 11 Octobre à De Markten de 14h à 17h.

Nous nous concentrons sur les disciplines des arts vivants, la performance, les arts visuels et numériques ainsi que les pratiques multidisciplinaires. Comme nous ne pouvons accueillir qu'autant d'artistes qu'il y a de figures de soutien, nous demandons à tout le monde de remplir un formulaire d'inscription. Ainsi, chaque artiste ou travailleur·euse culturel·le expérimenté·e intéressé·e compte.

Ceci est un appel à la solidarité dans le domaine artistique et donc nous demandons que tu puisses offrir ton temps gratuitement.

EN// Introducing Pairing is Caring Brussels:

Pairing is Caring Brussels is a project initiated by the SOTA Gap group, born out of the recognition of the challenges faced by emerging artists in establishing their careers. Our mission is to provide a supportive environment where emerging artists, irrespective of their backgrounds, receive the necessary tools and mentorship to thrive in the art world.

Our project envisions a community where emerging artists are paired with experienced mentors or cultural workers for a one-year commitment. Through monthly meetings, participants will receive career-oriented advice, support in navigating Brussels' art scene, guidance on  topics such as fundings, opportunities and project planning.

In addition to mentorship, we will offer a series of diverse workshops that will travel in different spaces both institutional or not that are actives in Brussels cultural ecology - such as De Markten, Kaaitheater, Iselp, etc. Theses workshop will explore different topics such as how to apply for subsisdies, how to get the « allocation des arts » and many more. 

Participant will also be comitted to be part of an autonomous peer support group where emerging artists can gather to share knowledge, tackle challenges together, and receive constructive feedback. For these specific event The Gap will provide the space and the participent will design the outlines of these sessions. 

Our journey begins with the matching event in October, followed by a series of workshops and feedback sessions throughout the year. Together, let's create a vibrant and inclusive artistic community in Brussels.

Key Objectives:

*Pair 50 emerging artists (25 FR/25 NL) to foster collaboration and exchange.
*Conduct workshops for 20 participants to enhance skills.
*Facilitate feedback and autonomous knowledge-sharing groups of 20 individuals to provide support and constructive criticism.
*Prioritize inclusivity and diversity by embracing artists from diverse disciplines and backgrounds.

NL// Voorstelling Pairing is Caring Brussel:

Pairing is Caring Brussel is een project onder initiatief van de SOTA Gap group, naar aanleiding van het erkennen van de uitdagingen die vele opkomende kunstenaars moeten aangaan in de aanloop van hun carrière. Onze missie om een ondersteunende omgeving aan te bieden, waar opkomende kunstenaars, ongeacht hun achtergrond, de nodige tools en mentorschap ontvangen om in de kunstwereld te kunnen openbloeien.

Ons project wil een gemeenschap bewerkstelligen, waar opkomende kunstenaars gepaard worden met ervaren mentoren of cultuurwerkers voor een één-jarig engagement. Tijdens maandelijkse meetings zullen de deelnemers carrière-georiënteerd advies ontvangen alsook ondersteuning in het navigeren van de Brusselse kunstwereld en begeleiding in onderwerpen als financiering, kansen en projectplanning.

Bovenop het mentorschap bieden we tevens een reeks verscheidene workshops aan die zullen reizen doorheen verschillende ruimtes - al dan niet institutioneel - die actief zijn in de Brusselse cultuurecologie zoals De Markten, Kaaitheater, Iselp, etc. Deze workshops zullen verschillende topics exploreren: subsidieaanvragen, hoe de « allocation des arts » te krijgen en nog vele andere. 

Deelnemers zullen zich ook engageren om deel uit te maken van een autonome peer ondersteuningsgroep waar opkomende kunstenaars kunnen samen komen om kennis uit te wisselen, samen uitdagingen aan te pakken en constructieve feedback te krijgen. Voor deze specifieke bijeenkomsten zal The Gap ruimtes voorzien en de deelnemers zullen beslissen hoe deze sessies er precies uitzien. 

We beginnen met het matching event in oktober, gevolgd door een serie workshops en feedbacksessies doorheen het jaar. Laat ons samen een levendige en inclusieve artistieke gemeenschap creëren in Brussel.

Sleuteldoelstellingen

*50 opkomende kunstenaars (25 FR/25 NL) koppelen om samenwerking en uitwisseling te bevorderen.
*Workshops organiseren voor 20 deelnemers om vaardigheden verder te ontwikkelen.
*Autonome groepen van 20 individuen voor feedback en kenniswisseling faciliteren om zodoende ondersteuning en constructieve kritiek aan te bieden.
*Inclusiviteit and diversiteit prioriteren door kunstenaars van diverse disciplines en achtergronden te verwelkomen.

Pairing is Caring Brussels est un projet initié par le groupe SOTA Gap, né de la reconnaissance des défis auxquels sont confronté·e·s les artistes émergent·e·s pour établir leur carrière. Notre mission est de fournir un environnement de soutien où les artistes émergent·e·s, quelles que soient leurs origines, reçoivent les outils nécessaires et le mentorat pour s'épanouir dans le monde de l'art.

Notre projet envisage une communauté où les artistes émergent·e·s sont jumelé·e·s avec des mentor·e·s expérimenté·e·s ou des travailleur·euse·s culturel·le·s pour un engagement d'un an. À travers des réunions mensuelles, les participant·e·s recevront des conseils orientés sur leur carrière, un soutien pour naviguer dans le milieu artistique bruxellois, des conseils sur des sujets tels que le financement, les opportunités et la planification de projets.

En plus du mentorat, nous proposerons une série d'ateliers divers qui voyageront dans différents espaces, institutionnels ou non, actifs dans l'écologie culturelle bruxelloise - tels que De Markten, Kaaitheater, Iselp, etc. Ces ateliers exploreront différents sujets tels que comment postuler pour des subventions, comment obtenir l'« allocation des arts » et bien d'autres encore.

Les participant·e·s s'engageront également à faire partie d'un groupe de soutien autonome où les artistes émergent·e·s peuvent se rassembler pour partager leurs connaissances, relever ensemble des défis et recevoir des feedbacks constructifs. Pour ces événements spécifiques, The Gap fournira l'espace et les participant·e·s concevront le cadre de ces sessions.

Notre voyage commence par le "Matching event" en octobre, suivi d'une série d'ateliers et de sessions de feedback tout au long de l'année. Ensemble, créons une communauté artistique vibrante et inclusive à Bruxelles.
