Application
If you have not previously served on staff for NMUN•NY, please combine the following documents into one PDF file and attach it below. Please name your file Last Name, First Name - Staff Application (e.g. Smith, Jane - Staff Application). If you are a returning NMUN•NY staff member, you are not required to submit any supplemental documentation, but you may optionally submit a cover letter and résumé/CV. Returning applicants that did not staff last year's conference are encouraged to do so.
1. Cover Letter (1 page max.)
Your cover letter should generally answer:
- Why are you interested in the volunteer staff position(s) for which you are applying? How will you contribute to the educational mission of NMUN and promote an inclusive environment?
- What specific skills and competencies do you foresee bringing to your role? If you have goals or areas in which you would like to learn and improve, please describe them.
- How confident are you that you will be able to meet the requirements of being an NMUN staff member? These include responding to conference-related communications within 24-48 hours (or communication, in advance, when you will not be able to do so), completing tasks/writing assignments within strict deadlines, and working in potentially high-stress situations. If you anticipate any challenges, be sure to describe them, and if there are other factors that would make you successful, including potential communication/feedback styles, working environments, or anything else, please describe them.
2. Résumé / CV (2 pages max.)
Your current résumé or CV. List all prior National Model United Nations experience you have (other model UN conferences may be included but are not required). Please detail countries represented and committees simulated as a delegate, as well as any experiences as Chair or conference volunteer staff.
3. Questions (1 page max.)
Starting on a new page, provide responses to the following questions. Brief responses are appreciated.
In a few short sentences, answer how you would handle the following situations:
- At some point during the conference, you become overwhelmed and very stressed. You have many, many tasks on your plate - you feel like more are piling up and there are multiple people waiting for you to finish them. The colleague you're working with is also busy. How would you handle this?
- While walking between rooms at the conference, a Faculty Adviser comes to you and expresses concern about a committee you aren't staffing and haven't been to. Their concerns seem valid, but you have no context for the situation. What do you do?
- You find yourself in disagreement with a colleague. You think that they have lied to you about how to do something and are otherwise taking too long to complete tasks. You also feel that they are making decisions without you. What do you do?
4. Writing Sample (3 pages max.)
Please submit a writing sample, with footnoted or in-text citations, of no more than three pages with your application (this can be an excerpt from a larger piece of work). The writing sample should not have gone through significant editing or revisions from external editors. At the beginning of the writing sample, please indicate for what purpose and when (month/year) it was written. You may submit a first draft of a MUN background guide from a different conference.
