It’s that time again—StageStruck: The Young People’s Own Theatre is
gearing up once again for what is sure to be a toe-tapping spectacle of a
Fall production! As we prepare to bring to life Disney’s iconic “Newsies:
The Musical”, we want to provide our young performers every opportunity
to feel prepared, knowledgable, and ready so that they can put their best
foot forward, both literally and figuratively! While we will be focusing the
majority of our intensive’s content on our upcoming production,
“Headliners: Tap to Triple Threat” will be beneficial for any young or
aspiring performer, whether they intend to audition for our show or not. All
are welcome!
In our ten days together, we will break down the basics and get our students comfortable in all areas of musical theatre performance (singing, dancing, & acting)—hence, the “triple threat”. We always want to set our students up for success and help provide them with the necessary tools to succeed. With that in mind, we will be focusing on the following during our time together:
• Tap Technique & Basics (All levels of skill will be challenged and exercised.)
• Jazz Technique & Basics (All levels of skill will be challenged and exercised.)
• Vocal Coaching—a healthy combination of vocal technique with the exploration of what it truly means to “act” a song.
• Song Selection—the art of picking appropriate material for yourself that best serves you and the show/role for which you are going in.
• Building Your Book—acquiring and accumulating repertoire to combine into one book to be used in any audition environment.
• Audition Technique
• Mock Audition—putting our knowledge to the test and on its’ feet!
• Quick Choreo Pick-Up & Performance—a chance to give you the tools to know how to absorb choreo/material quickly and efficiently, and the chance to put those tools to work.
• Vocal Health Workshop—a chance to get to truly understand your instrument and how to take care of it.
• Newsies History—Dramaturgical exploration of the history of the time, the real Newsies, and how the show came to be.
• Character Breakdown—the art of not only portraying a character, but the added understanding of a character—in short, how to approach a creative process.
• Storytelling—how to keep storytelling at the forefront and approach said process truthfully, vulnerably, & generously.
As Newsies is an exceptionally dance heavy show, much of our time together will certainly be catered to developing that skillset, but as you can see, our focus will run the gamut.
Tap will be heavily featured in our time together, but not to fear! Whether you have never shuffled a day in your life, or you are a seasoned tapper, we’ve got you covered! This is a time to learn, grow, and flourish in the safe space of our rehearsal studio and in the company of your fellow artists. We will however be tapping everyday, so folks should come with shoes at the ready!
While this intensive will not result in an official performance per-say, it will allow us the time to break down technique in all facets, a luxury we are not always awarded within the time restriction of a production process. It is my goal that our students ultimately leave with the confidence and skill of a professional young performer, unwavering in what they have to offer.
**Friendly Disclaimer: At no time in this workshop will our students’ work serve as an audition for StageStruck’s upcoming production of “Newsies”, nor will their involvement guarantee them a role within our cast. This is merely a tool to help our young performers feel as prepared as possible.**
