  • Volunteer Roles Description

    An Activity Leader will have responsibility for a group and their activity at the beach. All Activity Leaders will need to have the relevant coaching, rescue, and first aid qualifications.

    An Assistant Surf Coach will play a major role in the day to day running of surf sessions. Prerequisites are to be competent in the surf environment up to a safe standing depth of water in suitable conditions and to be an effective team member and role model. Qualifications or training modules are available that will enable ASCs to assist specific roles;

    • Lifesaving Awards - to assist lifesaving supervision during busy periods or at events.
    • Tandem Team training - to assist the Seated Tandem Surfboard Sessions.
    • Pusher and Catcher module - to assist the Para Surf Team training sessions.
    • Manual handling module -to assist wheelchair user transfers.


    A Beach Support Volunteer will assist in a range of dry duties, from set up and on the beach roles which include; 

    • Equipment checks and set up. 
    • Surfer registration and kit allocation.
    • Manual transfers and beach wheelchair shuttling.
    • Beach marshalling events.
    • Photos and media capture.
    • Supervising a quiet/chill out area for a surfer(s) looking for a rest period or sensory break during the activity.
    • Relaying information between groups and team members at different parts of the beach.
    • Can make the call to the emergency services if required.
  • Safer Recruitment Process

    Safe recruitment processes apply to all Friendly Access Trustees, Staff, and Volunteers, both full and part time. The following steps are taken when recruiting to ensure appropriate protection within the organisation.  Volunteers are recruited to contribute to activities under the direct supervision of staff.  

    • The Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020
      All volunteers will be required to complete a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme[1] application through Disclosure Scotland, and this will be checked by Friendly Access.

    • Volunteers work under the direct supervision of Friendly Access staff at all times. They should never be alone with any child, young person or vulnerable adult. 

    • Volunteers will be required to read and sign confirmation that they have read and understand all relevant Friendly Access Policies relating to their volunteering role, including our Safeguarding, Code of Conduct, and related Policies within our Staff and Volunteer Handbook.

    • All Volunteers will have access to, and be required to complete a 'Safeguarding In Sport' CPD Course.
