The nursing bootcamp is a collaboration between the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Nursing (UTHSC), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Department of Hematology (SJCRH), and the International Association of Sickle Cell Nurses and Professional Associates (IASCNAPA). It is funded by the Delta Health Care Services Grant, UTHSC College of Nursing, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Dr. Sara Day, Assistant Dean for the Center for Community and Global Partnership, UTHSC, Dr. Keesha Roach, Assistant Professor, UTHSC, College of Nursing; Brooke Clemons, UTHSC, and Yvonne M. Carroll, RN, JD, Director of Programs, Department of Hematology, SJCRH are co-PIs on the project.
We welcome all levels of nurses, those with years of sickle cell patient experience and those new to the field. We want a variety of experience levels and broad geographic representation, nationally and internationally.
The SCD nursing bootcamp was developed using an evidenced-based SCD curriculum developed by nursing experts throughout the US. The curriculum developers and instructors are Drs. Dominique Bulgin, Kathy Burns, Elisabeth Chismark, Sara Day, Artangela Henry, Cheedy Jaja, Stephanie Ibemere, Cheryl Brewer, Dora Clayton-Jones, Keesha Roach, Selorm Ansah, Lori Vick, and Christina Wills; as well as Yvonne Carroll, Pat Corley, Rae Blaylark, Brooke Clemons, and Charlene Sylvestre.
Participants must be able to attend all five days of the bootcamp and must be a registered nurse or nurse practitioner actively involved with the SCD patient community. There is limited space, please do not apply if you cannot attend the entire bootcamp.

Bootcamp organizers will provide bootcamp participants outside of the Memphis area with travel and lodging. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants Monday through Friday. Participants who do not live locally should bring enough funds to pay for meals that are not provided. Travel to and from the hotel to the bootcamp will be provided each day. A flat fee will be provided for incidentals and meals outside those provided.
International applicants are accepted; however, space is limited. Before travel arrangements can be made, international applicants MUST have a passport AND visa, if applicable.
The application is a competitive process; only 30 participants will be selected. Participants must submit requested documentation within one week after notification.
This bootcamp is an in-person interactive event. Participants must be actively involved in evidence-based practice exercises, train the trainer with teach-back exercises, break-out sessions, and lively discussions. Participants will collaborate with peers in research and teach-back project development outside of bootcamp hours.
After completion of the bootcamp attendees are required to participate in follow-up activities for at least 12 months, including intermittent phone calls or Zoom meetings to discuss how participants utilized and shared the knowledge obtained during the bootcamp and how the organizers can improve the bootcamp. Additionally photographs will be taken intermittently throughout the bootcamp and will be used by UTHSC, SJCRH, and IASCNAPA in connection with the Train the Trainer SCD Nursing Bootcamp - applying and signing the application provides approval to use photographs from the bootcamp.
