Why this petition matters: I am a Black Texan, and this issue is deeply personal to me. My ancestors, along with over 250,000 freed slaves in Texas, were forced to work without compensation because their slave owners refused to inform them of their freedom. This injustice lasted from 1863 through 1865 and even longer for those who remained captive beyond this period. This petition seeks justice for these individuals by demanding compensation for their unpaid labor, including penalties and interest. The economic impact of slavery has been profound and lasting; it laid the foundation for racial wealth disparities that persist today. According to a study by Harvard Business School (2017), the U.S. economy was built on the backs of slaves who received no pay or recognition. The time has come to rectify this historical wrong. We are calling on our government officials to enact legislation that will provide financial restitution to the descendants of these freed slaves in Texas. This is not just about money; it's about acknowledging our history honestly and taking steps toward healing. It is never too late to do the right thing. Please sign this petition if you believe in justice, equality, and reparations for historical wrongs committed against Black Texans. Your signature can help us make a difference today.
