Supported playgroups are a Victorian Government initiative, delivering the evidence-based smalltalk program free of charge to families with children from birth to school age.
A qualified facilitator leads these sessions where parents can develop their skills and confidence to support their child’s wellbeing and development. The program aims to provide a safe space for parents to build their social support network and learn more about the value of play in their child’s learning and development.
Who can attend a Supported Playgroup?
Families must meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:
- A family member in the household holds a Health Care Card or equivalent;
- Families in which a family member identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander;
- Families looking after children in kinship care arrangements (out of home care);
- Families referred from Child FIRST/Child Protection;
- Families referred from or participating in Enhanced Maternal and Child Health Services; or
- Families who do not meet the above criteria but require additional support due to factors such as social or geographical isolation (this is flexible and can be discussed with the playgroup facilitator).
