Description of Youth Initiatives
DELTA ACADEMY: Aimed at girls ages 11-14, the Dr. Shabazz Delta Academy, named for late sorority member and community and education advocate, seeks to empower girls toward academic achievement, healthy self-esteem, cultural awareness, leadership and designing a path to future success. The Bay Area Houston Alumnae chapter provides an opportunity for members to engage with girls and enrich their lives through mentorship, programmatic events, and community service.
DELTA GEMS: This initiative was created for young women ages 14-18 who are in Grades 9 through 12. The program goals are to instill the need to excel academically; to provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success; to assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures-high school and beyond; and to create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
EMBODI: Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence is designed to address the plight of African-American males and their issues related to STEM education, culture, leadership, healthy lifestyle choices, character, ethics, college readiness, fiscal management, and civic engagement. EMBODI provides opportunities for young men ages 11-18 who are in Grades 5 through 12 to interact with positive men in the community and engage in activities that are educational, uplifting, and fun as well as participate in community service activities.
