  • Thank you for your interest in the Ida B. Wells Youth Oratorical Contest.  The NAACP Nashville Branch is proud to partner with the National Museum of African American Music to host our Annual Ida B. Wells Youth Oratorical Contest and Youth Oratorical Training Camp at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, TN on Saturday September 29, 2024.  This year’s theme is:


    “Where Music Meets the Movement: Celebrating the Rhythm While Remembering the Blues”

    This theme celebrates the unique sound and unifying power of African American music that became a form of nonviolent protest and motivation during the civil rights era

  • All participants must me the following requirements:


    1. Must be a native of Tennessee and enrolled in school

    2. Age:10-19 

    3. 18-19 students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.

     
    Tiers:

    Tier 1 (Middle School) Ages: 10-13 

    Tier 2 (High School) Ages: 14-17 

    Tier 3 (College Freshman) Ages: 18-19

     

    Applications open May 1, 2024 and close May 22, 2024.

    Finalist will be announced before May 27, 2024.

    Phase II- Training Camp

     
    1. Once applied and selected in order to participate in the contest you must complete the online application and participate in the Youth Oratorical Training Camp at the National Museum of African American Music. 

    2. Transportation will be provided for all In-person sessions. 

    3. You must all have internet access and the compatible electronic device to meet via zoom during virtual sessions. 

    4. All contestantS must participate in all parts of the Contest

    Orientation Sessions will be held on Sundays in June at 6:30 p.m. Sessions will be scheduled once the applicant is selected.

  • Contract and Release of Media Rights and Interests

    For good and valuable consideration, including but not limited to, the right to participate in the Ida B. Wells Youth Oratorical Contest and the chance to win prizes and recognition in my area(s) of competition, I (“Participant”) hereby irrevocably grant to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (“NAACP”) and its successors, licensees, assigns, and contractors the absolute, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free, in perpetuity, right to record, photograph, depict, edit, modify, use, publicize, distribute, broadcast, reproduce, live-stream, post, print, copyright, license, and/or digitize, for any legal reason or purpose: (1) my voice; (2) my image and/or likeness; and (3) my entry and/or my participation in the Competition. Such a legal reason or purpose includes, but is not limited to, any arising out of, or related to, the Competition and/or NAACP marketing, education, and/or social media. I grant all rights, title, and interest in all such recordings, photographs, and depictions in any form or medium existing now or in the future to the NAACP. I understand that the NAACP will take reasonable steps to ensure that it, its successors, licensees, assigns, and contractors present my entry and any such recordings, photographs, and depictions in a manner that reflects positively on the NAACP and me. In return, I hereby release, discharge and agree to hold harmless NAACP and their successors, licensees, assigns, and contractors from any and all liability of any nature or description which arises out of, or is related to, any such recordings, photographs, and depictions, and from any damage or injury that may result from any type or recording process or other action taken in furtherance of completion of the finished product.I agree not to institute, assert, or consent to others instituting or asserting any legal action or lawsuit against the NAACP, or its directors, officers, employees, or agents, successors, licensees, assigns, or contractors on any grounds, including but not limited to, program content, print content, advertising and advertisers, fees, contractual terms and marketing.
