Need-based Scholarship Application Logo
  • 2025-2026 Department of Art : Need-based Scholarship

  • Undergraduate and graduate students within the Department of Art are eligible to apply for a limited number of need-based scholarships. These funds have been made available to support students within BYU's Department of Art who may be financially struggling. They are meant to offset the cost of tuition and class materials, and to assist disadvantaged students in continuing or completing their education.

    Applicants are required to submit:

    • Contact information
    • A detailed budget spreadsheet and narrative
    • Estimated costs for tuition and course-related materials

Due to a limited amount of funding, scholarships may not always be awarded up to the full requested amount. This is done on a discretionary basis. Decisions will be made based on a combination of stated need and budget narrative. Students may submit FAFSA EFC information, but this is not required. We encourage all Department of Art students who are in need to apply, including Pre-Majors.

The budget and its accompanying budget narrative are essential factors in our scholarship process. While this scholarship is intended to offset the financial burden of awardee's tuition and course-related expenses, it does not support all aspects of the awardee's financial need (e.g. rent, food, or the expenses of a spouse or dependent). Instead, the detailed, thoughtful accounting of both income and educational expenses will help provide context for the applicant's need, and help the scholarship committee determine where tuition-based scholarship funds can be of the most help.

All information shared here is considered confidential and will not be shared outside of the faculty reviewer panel. If you need assistance completing this application, please reach out to Maddison Colvin at maddison_colvin@byu.edu to set up an appointment (either in person or via Zoom) to go over your budget spreadsheet and narrative.

Applications are due by May 31st, 2025 at 11:59pm MDT.

Upon notification of acceptance, recipients of scholarships must provide a thank-you letter to grantors within two weeks in order to receive their funds.

NOTE: Applications cannot be saved and completed later. Scroll down to see the information you need to submit BEFORE you begin.

    • Budget Spreadsheet
    •

Please note the following when completing the  fillable budget template [downloadable here]

      • The requested amount should match (or be less than) the expected burden of academic expenses shown in the final line of the budget spreadsheet.

      • "Course-related expenses" is defined here as materials required for a specific class or medium. Individual projects such as capstone exhibitions, student teaching, etc. are eligible for Experiential Learning funding and should be requested through that application process.

      • If you are married or have dependents, please do not factor their expenses, educational or otherwise, into the budget template.
      • Please utilize the "quantities" fields carefully. For example, account for the cost of tuition per semester under "Amount" and then under "Quantity" enter the number of semesters in which you intend to be enrolled.

      • While you are welcome to share your FAFSA information, we recognize that these applications are not always accessible or reflective of current need. Our decisions may take FAFSA into account, but will be largely based on the self-reported budget spreadsheet and narrative.

    • Budget Narrative
    • The budget narrative may be entered in the three text boxes below. It should be detailed and provide additional context to the expenses and income listed in your budget spreadsheet.

This narrative should primarily be focused on financial needs immediately related to your education. If expenses related to your spouse or dependents, particularly emergent ones, are affecting your ability to continue your education, you may include that information in this narrative section.

It is best to keep the narrative concise, personal, and in your own words. Do not use ChatGPT or other AI assistance in composing your responses, as the committee is most interested in hearing your story in your own voice.
