    Ungulate Monitoring Methods Survey

    Jurisdictional Survey May 2024
  • Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) is interested in gathering insights from other jurisdictions regarding their current or proposed methods for monitoring ungulates. This information will aid us in evaluating options to address our management objectives and in determining opportunities for collaboration to address shared knowledge gaps.

This survey is intended to be completed by a representative from each jurisdiction who is familiar with the monitoring methods used across the state or province (e.g., ungulate, or big game specialist).

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

A summary of the results will be provided to participating jurisdictions.

     Thank you for your help.

  • The following section contains questions about the current method(s) used to monitor ungulates in your jurisdiction by agency staff, contractors, or other affiliates. We are also interested in learning the type and purpose of the information being collected for each species.

Monitoring data may be collected for many reasons (e.g., to address conservation concerns, to meet agency requirements to provide hunting allocations etc.). When asked below "1. What is the Main Reason for Monitoring?", please consider how the data are fundamentally informing wildlife management decisions.

Questions will be be repeated for each ungulate species monitored in your jurisdiction, unless you specify that ALL your selections for one species apply to another species.

Select the "+ Add Additional Method" button if multiple methods are used for an individual species (e.g., moose- remote camera and telemetry).

The following table is an example of the information sought in this section.

    Ungulate Monitoring Methods Survey
  • The following section contains questions about any new future monitoring method(s) your jurisdiction may be considering in the next 3 years. Do not include any methods that you are currently using unless they are being applied to a new ungulate species (e.g., new collaring program for bison). This information is useful to better understand the possible merit of each method to achieving ungulate monitoring needs and potential opportunties for cross-jurisdictional collaboration.
