Residency Period
Orientation
Artist shall meet with SDCC staff or other City staff for program overview, to receive requisite materials that inform the process and to identify core geographical areas and groups for engagement. Artist and SDCC staff agree to maintain open and flexible communication throughout the Residency Period.
Planning
At least one meeting shall occur between Artist and SDCC staff to confirm the scope of the Project, to create a strategy for research, to develop a meeting schedule, and to agree on a work plan.
Neighborhood Canvas/Research
Through a curious approach, Artist shall independently observe, interview, investigate and witness the Neighborhood/area of impact; while spending time researching and collecting information from local businesses and organizations and archives necessary to fulfill the agreed upon scope.
Continue Residency Period in accordance with the meeting schedule and work plan; and provide SDCC staff with weekly status reports that include information collected during the Canvasing process
Document the process: methods are predicated on media specific to the Artist’s interests and genre of work. (Social Media posts, photographs, video, journaling, sketching, etc.)
Report on notable issues or challenges with any core groups or persons or other challenges occurring during the Residency Period.
Work in tandem with SDCC staff to organize strategic community engagement to increase awareness of the Project and to include the Neighborhood in the process.
From time-to-time SDCC staff may coordinate with the Artist to capture and document the Artist’s Canvasing process.
Development
Concluding this phase, the Artist shall complete any outstanding research, meetings and community activities; and provide designated SDCC staff a research summary with the conceptual Project Proposal
Project Proposal
The Project Proposal consists of a narrative describing the artistic concept (inspiration, general intent and intended impact); the proposed scale, form, material(s) and media; indication of location/site/exhibition plan; and a timeline for production with preliminary cost estimate (Project Budget).
Artist shall thoroughly investigate costs associated with Production of the Project prior to submitting Project Proposal.
Additional Project Specifications (such as scaled plans, structural and infrastructure considerations, lighting and safety) must be submitted for sculptural work intended for exterior installation.
Offsite installations must be approved by the Site owner prior to submission of Project Proposal.
Project Production
Production of the Project shall be consistent and in substantial conformity with the approved final Project Proposal, and include any methodology involved in the creation of the Project.
Costs of materials required for fabrication; digital technology development and programming, audio/video recording/filming and subsequent editing; assembly or manufacturing of Project components, shall not exceed the approved Production Budget.
Production of the Project is subject to review by SDCC staff. Regular site visits will be determined upon approval of the Production Phase.
Presentation/Delivery Installation
Delivery of the fully functional, ready to distribute, connect, hang or otherwise install the completed Project with detailed instructions and specifications required for presentation and public access.
Installation requirements: foundations, wiring, lighting and other related components and parts shall be installed within the timeline submitted as a part of the Project Proposal.
Artist or designee shall install the Project to accepted professional standards or, in agreement with SDCC staff, defer installation methodology to staff’s discretion.
Project shall be installed for the entire agreed to duration of time.
