Eligible Participants: Social Workers, Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, School-Based Clinicians, Graduate Students, and others supporting the mental health and well-being of children and youth. No previous art therapy training is required.

Cost: This course is free-of-charge through a generous grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts.
CE Credits: Participants will receive 2 CE Credits upon completion.
Child Guidance Resource Centers (CGRC) is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors to offer continuing education for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors. CGRC maintains responsibility for the program.
Description: This training is intended to provide art techniques to clinicians without art therapy credentials when working with children and youth impacted by trauma. This training is applicable to clinicians practicing in diverse settings such as outpatient services, schools, and the community. Participants will learn the boundaries between art therapy and the use of art activities for non-art therapy professionals. The training will highlight the delicate interplay between childhood trauma, art, and therapeutic interventions. Participants will learn how to use art to teach specific skills, address behavior challenges, reduce traumatic stress, and increase emotional regulation.
Course Format: This 2-hour course will be held on-line via Zoom. The format will include a PowerPoint presentation and interactive participation using chat, small break-out groups, and large-group discussion. Participants will be encouraged to ponder the clinical, ethical, and practical aspects of using art in therapeutic settings.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Participants will be able to identify at least three ways art can be tailored to different age groups, considering developmental stages.
- Participants will be able to identify at least three ways to implement art making as a tool to facilitate healing and emotional expression.
- Participants will actively engage in hands-on art activities covering multiple modalities, with successful completion of at least two artworks, showcasing their practical application of various techniques.
