Help Keep a Credible, Hardworking and Ethical Commissioner on the Police Commission!

Police Commissioner Debra Walker has been a consistent voice of reason on a divided Commission for the past year and a half. She has worked hard to bridge the often ideological rifts within the Commission, has found time to collaborate with SFPD and other agencies to reduce crime, improve officer morale and recruitment, and has worked to reduce overdose deaths all while helping SFPD complete the 272 reforms laid out by the DOJ through the Collaborative Reform Initiative.

She has been fearless in holding the Commission accountable when they overreach or when the more ideologically driven members distort data which harms the perception of the SFPD and its officers. She has even courageously called for an investigation of the commission itself, when it was suspected of engaging in unethical behavior related to an officer investigation.

Debra Walker is one of the most common-sense, consistent, and ethical Commissioners, and it is critical to the integrity and balance of the Commission that she be re-appointed.

Dear Supervisors,&#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;The Police Commission is a necessary and important component in the network of City Government agencies dedicated to public safety.  It is clear from the passage of Prop E, the increase in public comment and media scrutiny, and the public call for the resignation of Commissioner Yanez, that this commission has become highly dysfunctional.  It is no secret that four of the seven BOS-appointed commissioners espouse anti-law enforcement biases with ideological beliefs about criminal justice reform that border on the fanatical and that their behavior has contributed significantly to the Commission’s decline in effectiveness and reputation.  &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Commissioner Walker has reliably worked to avoid the complete demoralization of our police force.  Thankfully, she and two other commissioners have been insistent on remaining true to the mission and spirit of this Commission. Debra Walker has been judicious, fair, and ethical in her approach to her job.  She challenges shoddy data, calls investigations when ethical violations arise, and listens attentively to every person who takes time out of their evening to step up to the podium to address the Commission.  Ms. Walker’s stellar and caring attitude is in stark contrast with the majority of the BOS appointees, who routinely fail to give their attention to speakers, present biased studies that they further misrepresent, and actively foster an unwelcoming and hostile atmosphere for those with whom they disagree. Ms. Walker clearly endeavors and succeeds in making ALL points of view welcome and considered in room 400 of CIty Hall.  &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;I cannot imagine why there is any hesitation about re-appointing Ms. Walker other than your own desire to keep pro-public safety, fair-minded and diligent commissioners off this important commission.  &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;At the hands of Commissioners Elias, Yanez, Carter-Oberstone and Benedicto this Commission has lost its credibility and its integrity. Debra Walker has been one of three commissioners whose efforts alone afford this Commission whatever shreds of dignity and legitimacy it still has.  Please help maintain some semblance of common sense on this Commission and re-appoint this incredible public servant.
