For parents requesting sacramental preparation for a child:
“The family has the most important role in communicating the Christian and human values that format the foundation for a child’s understanding of the Eucharist.” (National Directory of Catechesis p.126)
Children normally do not begin sacramental preparation unless there is regular attendance at Sunday Mass. That is first and foremost in the practice of our Faith. A weekday or “school Mass” does not satisfy the obligation to participate on Sundays. If you have not been attending Mass regularly, you can change that now! Your family is welcome at our parish, and we are here to support you in your Faith journey.
A parent’s own spiritual development is a vital component of a child’s formation. Parents are expected to pursue their own on-going catechesis as adults and attend sacramental preparation retreats along with their child.
The Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee sets forth guidelines for the preparation and reception of the sacraments. If you are registering your child for sacramental preparation for First Holy Communion and Reconciliation, you are committing to follow the guidelines set forth by the diocese and this parish.
At St. Paul Catholic Church, this sacramental preparation is typically accomplished in either of two ways: participation in the religious education curriculum of St. Paul Catholic School or through the parish’s Faith Formation classes (provided on Sundays during the school year).
*IMPORTANT: If you are NOT registered at St. Paul Catholic Church and you are seeking sacramental preparation, please know that sacraments are normally received in the parish in which your family attends weekly Sunday worship. If you wish for your child/children to receive their sacraments at St. Paul instead of your home parish, please contact program director Elizabeth Thompson to discuss options. For example: children that attend Saint Paul Catholic School but attend Mass at a different Catholic parish.
