Overview
Indiana Code (IC) 20-28-5-19.7 requires current Indiana educators who teach in a content area that involves literacy instruction for PK-5 students to earn Indiana's Early Literacy Endorsement for license renewal on or after July 1, 2027.
IC 20-32-8.5 requires schools where fewer than 70% of students achieve a
passing score on IREAD employ an instructional coach with a literacy-related endorsement who is trained in science of reading by July 1, 2025.
IC 20-20-49-3.2 defines a literacy coach as an individual whose primary responsibility is to provide literacy training and support to administrators and teachers. After July 1, 2027, this definition will also require literacy coaches to earn Indiana’s new Early Literacy Endorsement.
The requirements for adding Indiana’s Early Literacy Endorsement include the completion of 80 hours of evidenced based professional development aligned to science of reading that meets the criteria outlined beginning on page 26 here and a passing score of 159 or higher on Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205) Praxis Exam.
Educators will complete the form below to verify details of their training and upload their completion certificates. Additionally, educators can request a Praxis testing voucher upon submission of this approval request.
Once the professional development has been approved, IDOE will issue a confirmation letter that will be used by the educator to support the early literacy endorsement application in LVIS. If you have previously applied and need assistance with obtaining a copy of your confirmation letter, please email us at INLitCenter@doe.in.gov for more support.
