  • 2024 Seattle Dragon Boat Festival Volunteer Form

    Thank you for volunteering for the festival! The Volunteer Chair will confirm your specific assignments by Monday, May 27 via email. There will be more detailed instructions in the confirmation email. You will also be sent a waiver that is required to be completed in advance of the festival.

  • DESCRIPTION OF VOLUNTEER ROLES

    Please review all descriptions for needed qualifications before selecting which roles you are interested in volunteering for. 

    • Course Lane Marker Setup: Help setup up buoy markers to define race lanes (Must have prior paddling experience).
    • Floating Dock Setup/Tear Down: Help setup up floating docks at Lake Union Park (Must have prior paddling experience).
    • Boat Transport: Variety of tasks such as assisting with boat unloading/loading at Sunnyside Ave North boat ramp (north Lake Union); sitting in boats while they are towed down to South Lake Union; assist with paddling boats from Kenmore Air to MOHAI docks. And these tasks in reverse at conclusion of festival (Must have prior paddling experience).
    • Pre-Race Boat Move: Paddle boats from SLU Kenmore Air docks to MOHAI docks (Saturday 6:30 AM)
    • Park Cleaning: Clean the park before the tents are installed, including picking up trash and sweeping goose droppings (Friday)
    • Registration/Info Tent: Check-in registered teams, ensure all waivers signed, provide event information and location of facilities.
    • Merchandise Tent: Sell raffle tickets and festival merchandise.
    • First Aid Tent: Assist professional first aid medics (you will not be asked to treat injured, ill person(s)). Tasks might include informing race organizer, coaches, teammates, or informing the emergency contact of a medical issue.
    • Refreshment Garden: Sell tickets to enter the refreshment garden, distribute beverages to ticketed guests, general cleaning (wiping down tables, picking up trash), 3hr Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST) $20 online training required (https://www.washingtonalcoholtraining.com/)".
    • Event Maintenance: Keep area clean of debris (e.g. pick up trash, recycle).
    • Pre-Marshalling Tent: Gather teams for upcoming races, making sure all participants for an upcoming race are present and have PFDs and paddles.
    • Marshalling Tent: Complete final head count, PFD & gear check. Lead the team down to the dock and make sure the team knows where to stand on the dock.
    • Dock Marshal: Receives team from marshalling volunteer and verifies that the team loads the correct boats for the correct heat and lane.
    • Dock Hand: Help bring boats in, ties and release the dragon boats to the dock, helps paddlers in/out of the boats.
    • Starter Helper: Helps the starter. In some instances, asked to communicate with race organizers, chase boat operators, and callers/tillers.
    • Finish Line Helper: Assists with monitoring the finish line, running results/ advancements to the Results Board.
    • Kenmore Air Liaison: 1. Communicate with Kenmore Air of all race activities (e.g. race begins, starting heats, event breaks, event ends); 2. Communicate with dragon boat event coordinators (e.g. incoming and outgoing flights) address issues, concerns.; 3. Bring lunch to Kenmore Air"
    • Parking Attendant: Collect payments, or verify prior payments for the paddler parking lot;  track the number of empty parking spots to be filled.
    • Floater: Provide general support/substitute areas that need coverage.
