About Bertha Retreat

Bertha Retreat is a rural retreat and convening space one hour outside of Cape Town where Bertha Foundation grantees, partner organizations, NGOs, residents from surrounding communities and other users can meet to connect, work, strategise, and reflect. Bertha Retreat includes accommodation for 34 people, conferencing facilities and meeting rooms, a micro-farming and food production project, and a community resource centre.

What We Offer

We offer accommodation, catering, andconferencing facilities specifically designed to serve people and groups working to advance social justice and human rights for all. Our business model prioritizes the advancement of fair labor practices, working closely with our neighboring communities and operating in an environmentally sustainable way.

Our rates are all inclusive. This includes all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and tea breaks), use of our conferencing hall that can host up to 60 people, use of audio-visual equipment including a projector, and basic stationery.

Our Rates

We charge different rates based on a visiting group's ability to pay. We don’t prescribe what rate should be paid, but encourage partners to select the rate most appropriate for their organization, remembering that all booking fees power the space; the higher the rate paid for each visit, the more we are able to stretch our resources and ensure that the local community and poorly resourced groups are able to access the facilities. Please note that rates are subject to change and seasonal availability.

Standard Rate: Our Standard Rate remains more affordable than comparable commercial alternatives and is targeted at larger non-profit groups, philanthropic organizations, academic institutions, and social enterprises with an annual budget or annual revenue of R12 million or more.

Middle Rate: Our Middle Rate applies to medium-sized non-profit organizations or initiatives with lower budgets but with some resources to cover event fees. These groups receive an additional 20% off bookings at Bertha Retreat’s 24-hour Retreat and Accommodation packages and a 30% discount on event space bookings at Bertha House. To qualify groups must have an annual budget of R12 million or less.

Low Rate: Our Low Rate caters for smaller non-profit organizations with more constrained budgets. These groups receive 40% off Bertha Retreat’s 24-hour Retreat and Accommodation packages, and are exempt from venue rental fees at Bertha House. To qualify for this discount groups must have a budget of R3 million or less per year.

All groups making bookings regardless of sliding-scale selection must align with our values and code of conduct.

24-Hour Retreat and Accommodation Package Our packages include accommodation, all-inclusive meals and snacks, conferencing facilities (60-seater conference hall including two breakaway rooms) and AV equipment. Prices are per night and inclusive of VAT.

Bertha Network Rate

Any organization that has received a grant from Bertha Foundation within the last three years (including host organizations for Bertha Challenge and Bertha Justice Fellows) and Community Based Organizations and groups working in the the surrounding area may request up to TWO visits (maximum duration 3 nights) to Bertha Retreat per calendar year. Additional visits may be requested, but will be subject to charges based on the rates above.

Please note that due to high demand, it may be necessary that Organizations share use of the property. This will be communicated to those concerned via email by the Bertha Retreat team.

Booking/security deposit

For the Standard, Middle and Low rate bookings, Bertha Retreat requires a deposit of 50% of the total cost of the stay.

For the Bertha Network Rate, Bertha Retreat requires a security deposit of R10,000.

Payment

Bertha Retreat accepts payment via bank transfer. An invoice with payment details will be provided.
