  • Introduction

  • Thank you for your kindness in volunteering / working to assist the Mount Carmel College community.

    We will endeavour to provide you with:

    • A full induction, orientation and any training, as necessary for your role;
    • A safe and healthy environment in which to perform your role;
    • A supervisor (if relevant); and
    • For volunteers, insurance to cover you for the volunteer duties you are authorised to perform.


    We ask that you:

    • Abide by our Code of Conduct (below);
    • Participate in all relevant and required induction and training programs;
    • Use any property or equipment given to you in your role only for the purpose of the work and return it to the College when you finish your role;
    • Let us know if you wish to change the nature of your contribution; and
    • Be open and honest in your dealings with us and let us know if we can improve the support that you receive.


    As a volunteer or worker at our College you:

    • Will be involved in providing support, guidance and supervision directly to students;
    • Could potentially have direct unsupervised contact with students;
    • Are not an employee of Mount Carmel College;
    • Are not entitled to a salary or any other entitlements associated with employment;
    • Will be required to provide a Certificate of Currency for public liability insurance (except volunteers)

    Work Health and Safety
    Our College has an obligation under Work Health and Safety legislation to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, a safe and healthy working and learning environment for all students and staff, including permanent and casual employees, contractors, volunteers and visitors. You also have certain WHS obligations. To help our College ensure that these obligations are met, we have established a Safety Induction Package to help you:

    • Meet College safety requirements;
    • Take all reasonable precautions to prevent, by action or omission, injury to yourself or to others; and
    • Take all reasonable precautions to prevent, by action or omission, damage to College premises, plant or equipment.

    College staff will be available to you during school hours to discuss any health and safety or other issues that may arise during your volunteer work at the College. We look forward to working cooperatively with you to ensure your safe and enjoyable work in our College.

  • Critical Safety Information

  • 1. Sign in/out
    Please ‘sign in’ at the College office upon arrival at the College and ‘sign out’ prior to leaving. Please ensure that you are provided with a Visitor tag from Office staff.


    2. Policies

    3. Equipment and Materials 
    All equipment and materials that you bring to the College and/or use in connection with your work for the College must comply with legislative requirements and/or Australian Standards. All electrical equipment must be approved for use by the College Business Manager and be tested and tagged.


    4. Directions
    Please comply with all reasonable instructions and directions given by College staff. Any concerns can be referred by you to the College Principal.


    5. Child Safety
    You must comply with CET’s Child Safety Policy and must read and sign the CET Safeguarding Briefing for Contractors, Consultants, Counsellors & Volunteers prior to commencing work. Depending on the nature of your role, you may be required by the College Principal to complete CET online Child Safety and Compliance modules.


    6. Working With Vulnerable People Registration
    College volunteers, contractors, counsellors, consultants and tutors must have volunteer Working with Vulnerable People Registration prior to commencing work for/at the College. For further information please see the Department of Justice website: https://cbos.tas.gov.au/topics/licensing-and-registration/work-with-vulnerable-people, or contact the College Office. A copy of the Registration card must be supplied to the College prior to commencing work.


    7. Injuries and Incidents
    All injuries and accidents are to be reported to the College office immediately. Injuries and accidents to other College workers or students must also be reported by you where you are the first witness or the incident is reported to you. 


    8. First Aid
    If first aid assistance is required while on College premises, please contact the College Office. The office staff are trained First Aid Officers. A defibrillator, student epipens, spare epipens, first aid kits, asthma kits and other first aid supplies are kept at the office. If an injury has occurred, you may be asked to complete an electronic Safety Incident Form.

    College staff working off-site with you will carry a first aid kit. Volunteer sports coaches will be issued with a first aid kit. Please liaise with the College’s Sports Administration Officer to ensure that the first aid kit is maintained and used items are replaced. Please also immediately report any off-site injuries to yourself or students to the College Office. Sports volunteers will also be provided with a copy of the CET WHS Guidance Note on Concussion. If this document has not been
    provided to you, please contact the College Sports Administration Officer.


    9. Staff and Students
    Please be mindful of College staff and students.

    • Do not leave equipment unsecured
    • Offensive or derogatory language is prohibited
    • No pets on-site


    10. Other Areas
    Do not enter any areas on-site which you are not authorised to enter.


    11. Smoking/Drugs/Alcohol
    Smoking and illegal drug use are not permitted under any circumstances. Alcohol consumption is not permitted except when approved by the Principal for specific College social events.


    12. Hazards
    If you identify a potential safety hazard please immediately report it to the College Office.


    13. Cease Work
    Please cease work immediately if you deem a situation to be unsafe and inform the College office staff immediately.


    14. Bathroom Facilities
    Please ensure that at all times you use only the toilets and amenities allocated to you on-site and not student amenities. Volunteer/visitor toilets are located in Lauramont House, Providence House, the Early Learning Centre and the ground floor of the Cahill Centre.


    15. Site Security
    Please take responsibility to secure your (and the College’s) equipment from damage or theft via locking access points, etc.


    16. Emergency Procedures
    Please follow the instructions on the Emergency Action Guides that are displayed around the College. In each classroom, emergency procedures can be found on the wall next to the Exit door. Emergency drills are carried out regularly. If a drill is called or an emergency occurs, please ensure that you proceed calmly to the emergency assembly point and follow the directions of College wardens.

    Emergency Assembly Points

    • The fire evacuation assembly point is the Basketball Court in the Primary School area.
    • The evacuation assembly point for a threat (i.e. bomb threat) is Queenborough Oval on Nelson Road.


    Emergency Evacuation Alerts

    • Fire evacuation: Automatic continuous siren
    • Evacuation in response to a threat: Evacuation alert tone with recorded verbal
      instruction "evacuate, evacuate, evacuate"
    • Lock Down: Lock Down alert tone with verbal instruction

    17. Complaints

    Complaints can be made in the following ways:

    To a College staff member

    To the TCEO

    To CECT (the Governing Body); or

    Through the online CET Feedback Portal

    If you need assistance to make a complaint, please contact the College or the TCEO by calling (03) 6210 8888.  All contact with the TCEO regarding a complaint must be logged by the TCEO in the CET Feedback Portal.

  • Code of Conduct

  • To assist the College in providing a safe environment and a positive educational climate, volunteers, consultants, counsellors and tutors are expected to comply with the following guidelines:

    Put Safety First

    • Observe safe work practices which avoid unnecessary risks;
    • Only work according to your level of competency;
    • Follow reasonable safety instructions given by supervisors;
    • Report any safety hazard or hazardous practice; and
    • Assist in implementing evacuation procedures if required.

    Have Respect for Others
    Treat students, staff and other members of the College community with respect and in particular:

    • Treat everyone with courtesy, sensitivity, tact, consideration and humility;
    • Dress appropriately having regard to the nature of the work/volunteering activity;
    • Assist in the creation of an environment free from fear, harassment, racism or exploitation;
    • Respect the cultures, beliefs, opinions and decisions of others;
    • Take reasonable instruction from staff and not obstruct staff in the execution of their duties; and
    • Avoid waste and make proper use of the resources of the College.

    Communication
    Use appropriate communication skills when engaging with students, staff and other members of the College community and in particular:

    • Avoid swearing or other use of profanities;
    • Use non-discriminatory respectful and non-judgmental language;
    • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality;
    • Be aware of people’s personal space;
    • Be aware of your own body language; and
    • Seek advice where appropriate.


    Prohibited Conduct
    Do not:

    • Smoke or use tobacco products;
    • Use, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol;
    • Use, possess, or be under the influence of illicit drugs; or
    • Utilise your position to take advantage of any young person.
  • Collection Notice

    1. In volunteering and working to assist the Mount Carmel College community you will be providing the College with personal information.

    2. If you provide us with personal information, for example your name, address and other personal contact details, we will collect and store the information in order to facilitate your work for the College.

    3. The College’s Privacy Policy sets out how you may seek access to your personal information and how you may complain about a breach of the Australian Privacy Principles under the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988. The Privacy Policy can be viewed on the College website.

    4. We will not disclose this information to a third party without your consent.

    5. The College may store personal information in the 'cloud', which may mean that it resides on servers which are situated outside Australia.

    6. If you provide us with the personal information of others such as emergency contacts, we encourage you to inform them that you are disclosing this information to the College and the reasons why. They should be informed that they can access the information if they wish and that the College does not usually disclose this information to third parties.
  • Acknowledgement of Induction and Undertaking to Comply with WHS Requirements

  • Agreement

    1. If a student within my care sustains an injury requiring first aid I will liaise with College staff to ensure that the student is treated by a College first aid officer as soon as possible. If necessary I will administer first aid to the student consistent with my current level of training. I will ensure that a College staff member is notified and I will assist the College staff member to complete the College Safety Incident Form as soon as possible.

    2. If I sustain an injury while volunteering, working or visiting the College, I will report the injury to a College staff member as soon as possible and assist the staff member to complete the College Safety Incident Form.

    3. I will immediately report any hazards that I am aware of to a College staff member.

    4. I will not operate or use any equipment unless suitably qualified and instructed.
  • Acknowledgement and Undertaking

    1. I have read the above WHS Induction information.

    2. I undertake to comply with the WHS requirements specified in the Critical Safety Information form and to co-operate with any further WHS directions that may be given to me by College staff during or in relation to my work or attendance at/for the College.

    3. I undertake to obtain Working with Vulnerable People Registration pursuant to the requirements of the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 and the CET Working with Vulnerable People Policy and not to commence work or volunteering at the College until I have obtained registration as prescribed.

    4. I am familiar with the College Privacy Policy which is available via the Mount Carmel College website. I will keep confidential any student medical and other personal information that I become aware of in connection with my role at the College.

    5. I undertake to comply with relevant statutory WHS requirements and obligations.

    6. I undertake to comply with all relevant CET and Mount Carmel College policies.

    7. I undertake to sign and comply with the Catholic Education Tasmania Safeguarding Briefing for Contractors, Consultants, Counsellors & Volunteers and, if deemed necessary by the Principal, I will complete relevant Catholic Education online Child Safety and Compliance modules.

    8. I acknowledge that a failure to meet these WHS and Code of Conduct requirements may mean that I am no longer authorised to work or volunteer at/for Mount Carmel College.
