Thanks for your interest in joining Duchamp & Sons.
About Duchamp & Sons
D&S is Whitechapel Gallery’s youth collective, we work collaboratively on projects which can include curating exhibitions, developing new artworks alongside artists, programming events at the gallery and more. We meet 2-3 times a month on Wednesday evenings at Whitechapel Gallery from 5pm-7pm and members are expected to try and attend every session.
The collective is made up of around 20 members, aged between 15-24 years old. Once you’ve joined D&S you can remain a member up until you turn 25, or until you choose or need to leave the group for other commitments.
Joining the group
Every September we welcome a small number of new members into the collective, filling the spaces of those who have recently left the group. No previous art experience is necessary to get involved. We’re interested in hearing from young people who enjoy exploring art and working collaboratively, and are able to commit to regularly attending D&S sessions.
This is how the application process works:
1. Complete this application form by 10am, Friday 6 September 2024
The form consists of two elements: an About You section, and an Equal Opportunities monitoring section to help us understand who our opportunities are reaching.
2. If you're eligible you'll be invited to attend the Duchamp & Sons Taster Evening at Whitechapel Gallery on Weds 18 September, 5-7pm.
These taster evenings are an opportunity for us to find out more about you, for you to see what a Duchamp & Sons session is like, and discover more about our upcoming projects. We are often oversubscribed to join Duchamp & Sons, so these evenings also help us select who will be offered a place to join the group.
3. Wait to hear back.
We’ll contact you after the Taster Evening to let you know if we’re able to offer you a place as part of Duchamp & Sons. If you’re offered a spot, our Autumn project will start on the 25 September.
Please note that when we’re oversubscribed we prioritise places for those
- Aged 15-19, so that you can be part of the group for several years
- From East London, in particular Tower Hamlets & Newham
- From backgrounds underrepresented in the arts sector
- With least prior access to similar opportunities
