Master Class Series

Application
The CMS Master Class series provides performance opportunities and educational experiences to the next generation of chamber ensembles while fostering deeper engagement between artists, performing ensembles, and audiences. All Master Classes take place in the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio at CMS and are filmed for release as part of the CMS Digital Archive.

Application Timeline
- Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Ensembles will be selected with waitlist and confirmed for final participation one (1) month from date of Master Class
- Applications are to be submitted by the following dates:
  - Gilbert Kalish, piano--applications are closed
  - Paul Watkins, cello--applciations are closed
  - Calidore String Quartet--application due December 20, 2024
  - Chad Hoopes, violin--application due January 31, 2025
  - Adam Walker, flute--application due March 4, 2025
Application Requirements
- Repertoire Selection
- Biography of each performer (100-150 words)
- One Letter of Recommendation for the Ensemble
  - This should be a Faculty recommendation, emailed to education@chambermusicsociety.org by the Master Class submission date
Information for Selected Ensembles
- Each ensemble must be available from 9:30am-1:00pm on the Master Class date
- Master Class time is from 11:00am-1:00pm on the listed date
- 2-3 Ensembles will be selected for each Master Class
- For each performer, we are happy to extend one (1) comp ticket to a CMS concert featuring the Master Class artist

Gilbert Kalish, piano - November 15, 2024

The Piano in Mixed Ensembles
The profound influence of pianist Gilbert Kalish as an educator and a pianist in myriad performances and recordings has established him as a major figure in American music-making.

In this Master Class, he explores the repertoire of the piano with mixed ensembles.

Suggested Repertoire: pieces for piano with strings and winds.

Paul Watkins, cello - January 21, 2025

The Cello in Mixed Ensembles
Acclaimed for his inspirational performances and eloquent musicianship, Paul Watkins enjoys a remarkably varied and distinguished career as soloist, chamber musician, and conductor.

In this Master Class, he explores the repertoire of the cello in mixed ensembles.

Suggested Repertoire: pieces that include the cello in a mixed ensemble and/or works by British composers.

Calidore String Quartet - February 6, 2025

The String Quartets of Beethoven
The Calidore String Quartet has been praised by the New York Times for its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct.”

In this Master Class, the Calidore String Quartet explores the evolution of Beethoven's approach to the string quartet.

Repertoire: please select one (1) movement of a string quartet from either the Early, Middle, or Late Period of Beethoven. One selection from each period will be chosen for this Master Class.

Note: for this Master Class, selected string quartets must have a minimum of one (1) year of performance experience together as an ensemble.

Chad Hoopes, violin - March 10, 2025

The Classical and Romantic Violin
American violinist Chad Hoopes is a consistent and versatile performer with the world’s leading orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, l’Orchestre de Paris, l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and the Minnesota and National Arts Centre orchestras, as well the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Houston, and National symphonies.

In this Master Class, he examines the violin through the Classical and Romatic periods.

Suggested Repertoire: works by Mozart, Smetana, or Dvořák.

Adam Walker, flute - April 11, 2025

Exploring Expression and Color
At the forefront of a new generation of wind soloists, Adam Walker was appointed principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2009 at the age of 21 and received the Outstanding Young Artist Award at MIDEM Classique in Cannes.

In this Master Class, he explores the flute as a tool for expression, color, and communication.

Suggested Repertoire: works by French composers, Schubert, or Prokofiev.

Submission Deadline: March 4, 2025
