    MSEF is collaborating with teachers across the state to provide professional development for middle and high school teachers. See program dates and details below.


    These programs are free of charge to teachers.

    These programs are designed for classroom teachers and school leaders. 

    Space is limited. Only sign-up below if you can commit to the program so we can plan accordingly.

    Reuben Hoar Library, Littleton

    Host: Valerie Finnerty, Littleton Public Schools

    10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Mid-morning refreshments provided

    Middle School and High School Focus

    Science Fair Building Blocks: Join experienced teacher Valerie Finnerty and learn more about her experience building a middle school program, and then transitioning that work to high school. 

    MSEF will give an overview of the benefits and process of science fair programs and answer questions about updates that have been made to streamline the process to better support student learning.

    Athol-Royalston High School, Athol

    Host: Latasha Sheffield, Athol-Royalston Schools

    9 a.m. - 2 p.m., lunch provided

    Suitable for Middle School and High School programs, learn more about how to support a group of students doing independent research. Help students develop topic ideas, set reasonable goals, and develop timelines so the process doesn't feel rushed. Leave with a game plan to help students have strong project plans.

    In the morning we will explore outside spaces around the school for ideas on how to help students generate project ideas based on observations and phenomena.

    Scientific Review Crash Course: Primarily for High School teachers

    Knowing the rules and systems can be the key to pushing your school’s program to the next level and improve the experience for students and teachers. This workshop is designed to improve your support at the school level. Agenda will cover forms, risk assessment, and restricted areas for research while exploring different scenarios and common challenges. 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

    Morning Focus - Middle School Paperwork and Process

     Description: In this session participants will learn how to plan, organize and execute a Middle School Science Fair Program. Participants will learn about various models and identify the best approach for their situation. We'll walk you through the rules and systems for managing timelines, paperwork, and approvals so that you can focus more on teaching and supporting students. 

     

    Afternoon Focus - Middle School Strategies for Success

     Description:  In the afternoon, we will review popular strategies for idea generation, providing feedback for students, and alignment with classroom lessons. Come prepared to share your own successes and challenges for discussion.

    Acton-Boxborough Schools

    Auditorium of Central Office, 15 Charter Road, Acton, MA. Participants can park in the Parker Damon Parking lot adjacent to Central Office.

    High School Focus

    Learn from Brian Dempsey on how they've created a “Research Ecosystem” at Acton-Boxbrough Regional High School. Ideas for long term, sustainable growth of research opportunities will be shared, including a summer science research program, an after school research club, in-school research electives, and ideas for getting other teachers and administrators to “buy-in” to science and engineering research at your school.

    MSEF will provide information about navigating paperwork and how to support students working across a range of project topics.
