Criteria for Fellowship in Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA)
There will be two parts that must be fulfilled in order to apply for Fellowship in SCDA.
Part I is the general requirement. Part II is the portfolio in addition to part I.
PART I
Requirements:
- SCDA Membership in good standing for 3 years or more.
- Attend at least three special care dentistry conferences within the past five years. One must be the SCDA Annual Meeting. Two may be an international organization’s conference recognized as having a specialty care focus, with appropriate documentation.
- Complete a minimum of 30 hours of special care continuing education (CE) that includes an SCDA conference and one SCDA online program within the last five years.
- Two reference/sponsor letters – one must be a current fellow within the area being sought and one must be a professional colleague.
PART II
Complete a narrative portfolio describing your special care dentistry experience. This may be a combination of any of the following that add up to 100 points.
Maximum points available in each category are listed. ALL LISTED ACTIVITIES MUST BE POST-DOCTORAL. (i.e. not within the DDS or DMD program)
- Residency or fellowship training in an area of special care dentistry. – up to 45 points
- 25 points for 1 year residency/fellowship (AEGD, GPR, Pediatric Dentistry, Geriatric Dentistry)
- 10 additional points per year for each additional years of residency/fellowship
- 10 additional points for residency/fellowship training/ masters program with extraordinary emphasis in an area of Special Care Dentistry (by narrative submitted by applicant with supporting documentation)
- Mini-residency or fellowship training in area of Special Care Dentistry (<1 year) – up to15 points
- 5 points for 1 week programs
- 10 points for 2 week programs
- 15 points for 3 week+ programs
- Verification of 30 additional hours of approved continuing education in Special Care Dentistry in the last five years –beyond the 30 hours requirement in Part I requirements. – up to 25 points
- Published research or clinical article in an area related to or with applications to special care dentistry.
- Original research article in peer reviewed journals (limit 3) – up to 45 points
- 15 points for first or last author.
- 10 points for co-authors.
- Case reports. (limit 3) – up to 10 points
- Author of chapter included in text book – up to 15 points.
- Special Care Dentistry Table clinic presentation – up to 10 points
- Documentation of a community project involving special care dentistry; i.e., Dental Health Fair for persons with disabilities, Special Olympics/Special Smiles – up to 5 points.
- Development and implementation of professional programs in special care dentistry at the local level – In-Service Programs, etc. – up to15 points
- Development and implementation of professional programs in special care dentistry at the state or regional level that awarded continuing education credits – up to 20 points
- Development and implementation of professional programs in special care dentistry at the national or international level that awarded continuing education credits – up to 25 points
- Membership in professional organizations other than SCDA that focus on special care patient issues like Special Care Advocates in Dentistry (SAID), Autism Society, Gerontology Society. – up to 5 points
- Serving on the SCDA Board of Directors or with an official national level organization in Special Care Dentistry elsewhere- up to15 points
- Serving on a state or provincial level Board of Directors of an official Special Care Dentistry professional group- up to10 points
- Serving on Legislative Committees or Taskforces at the state or provincial level to promoteSpecial Care Dentistry. Please describe goal and the extent of your involvement- up to10 points
- Serving on Legislative Committees or Taskforces at the national level worldwide to promote Special Care Dentistry. Please describe goal and the extent of your involvement– up to15 points
- Regularly scheduled clinical care to special care patients in a nursing home, group home, personal residence, mobile programs, hospital, institution, or private or university clinic setting for at least 3 years. – up to 10 points
- Regularly scheduled clinical care to special care patients in nursing homes, group homes, personal residences, mobile programs, hospital, institution or private or university clinic setting for over 3 years and less than 5 years- up to 15 points
- Regularly scheduled clinical care to special care patients in nursing homes, group homes, personal residences, mobile programs, hospital, institution or private or university clinic setting for over 5 and less than 10 years - up to 20 points.
- Regularly scheduled clinical care to special care patients in a nursing home, group home, personal residence, mobile programs, hospital, institution, or private or university clinic setting for more than 10 years. – up to 25 points
