The incidence of side effects from oral minoxidil are described in a systematic review (study of published evidence and research) published in the International Journal of Trichology in August 2020. The study, Effect of Oral Minoxidil for Alopecia: Systematic Review, summarised the following findings from 9 published studies:
Hypertricosis (excess body hair) was reported in 4% to 93% of users of oral minoxidil.
Peripheral oedema (fluid retention and swelling) was reported in 0.22% to 10.0% of users.
Further information about potential side effects from oral minoxidil are described in he Oral Minoxidil Patient Information Leaflet. Please contact Dr. Ball if you would like to discuss side effects in more detail.
The dose of oral minoxidil taken for treating hair loss is significantly lower than that used for treating hypertension. Therefore, the risk of experiencing a significant lowering of your blood pressure is extremely low. However, Dr Ball recommends that you purchase a basic electronic blood pressure monitor and keep a record of your blood pressure, pulse and weight before your first dose and once a week during the first 3 weeks of treatment. We ask you to complete our blood pressure monitoring form and submit it to Dr Ball for review.
Oral minoxidil can potentially cause fluid retention and Dr. Ball asks that you monitor your weight once a week during the first 3 weeks of treatment and for the first 3 weeks after any dose increase. This can also be entered into the monitoring form below.
If you detect a lowering of your blood pressure or a rise in your pulse or weight, please stop the medication and contact Dr Ball.
Oral minoxidil has been associated with a risk of pericarditis (inflammation of the lining surrounding the heart) or pericardial effusions (fluid accumulating around the heart). If you experience any chest discomfort, breathlessness or palpitations it is necessary to stop the medication and contact your GP/A&E promptly.
One month after you have received your first order, we will contact you by email to check that you have tolerated the treatment and offer to arrange delivery of a continued supply of medication. You will then have the option of ordering a 2 or 6 month supply of medication.
If you experience side effects at any time whilst taking oral minoxidil, please contact Dr Ball or speak to your GP. If you feel unwell outside office hours we advise contacting your out of hours GP service or A&E department.
