It is of utmost importance that you read the following instructions prior to your appointment. Following these instructions will result in a predictable outcome of your oral sedation appointment. Please feel free to ask your dentist any questions or concerns you might have regarding your upcoming sedation appointment.
Diet: To help ensure a predictable outcome of sedation, it is important that you do not eat anything for at least 6 hours prior to sedation. Clear liquids (water, apple juice) can be consumed up to 3 hours prior to the appointment. Additionally, please refrain from foods containing grapefruit and pomegranate for 1 week prior to your appointment. If you must eat (diabetic patients or those who must take medications with food), please have a small light meal with low fat content (toast, banana).
Attire: Please dress comfortably for your appointment. Keep in mind that sedation appointments usually last for several hours. The ultimate goal of sedation is to provide care in a comfortable and stress-free environment. Do not wear contact lenses, lipstick, excessive make-up or nail polish on the day of the appointment.
Medications: Please provide a current list of prescription as well as over-the-counter medications to your dentist prior to the appointment day. Please take your usual medications as you normally would. If you take any sedatives (including sleep aid medications) please discuss with your dentist prior to the appointment day. If there is a change in medical history or medications between the consultation and actual treatment appointment, please call our office with the update to prevent delays in treatment.
Stimulants: Consumption of stimulants can affect the predictability of oral sedation. Please refrain from stimulants (caffeine, tobacco, alcohol) at least 8 hours prior to appointment.
Pregnancy: Patients must have NO chance of pregnancy at the time of getting oral sedation. Mothers who are nursing are not usually excluded from oral sedation but please discuss with your dentist prior to the appointment day."
Allergies: Please ensure that your dentist has a list of all the allergies that you have. This includes allergy or sensitivity to latex, medications, or any foods (as it might be necessary to feed you a small snack during the procedure).
Transportation: You will need a responsible adult not only to drive you to and from the appointment but also to take care of you for the remainder of the day. The effects of sedation medications will prevent you from operating motor vehicles or heavy machinery. This responsible adult should be physically capable of taking care of you. Although your ride does not have to be present in the premises for the duration of the procedure but they should leave a cell phone number where they can be reached in case of an emergency or if it looks like that your treatment will finish earlier or later than anticipated.
