Emergency protective holding may be required when an adult poses an unanticipated risk to self, other people, or the environment. In such situations, Triangle, Inc. staff may have to intervene by holding the adult to prevent movement. All staff are trained to apply protective holding safely until the child/adult is calm and no longer poses a risk. Only that staffs current in their Safety Care trainings are able to implement a protective hold.
Staff documents each incident of emergency protective holding and report each incident to a designated administrator. As guardians, you will be notified if and when emergency protective holding was implemented.
If an emergency protective hold is applied two times during a consecutive 30-day period, a Triangle, Inc. clinician and allied staff will prepare a written Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP) that includes planned use of protective holding. As guardian, you will be asked to review and consent to the PBSP.
Please be advised that there is risk of injury whenever physical contact is applied by one or more staff for the purpose of protective holding. Triangle, Inc. takes every step to ensure that health risks to a adult are avoided, that staff are properly trained to implement protective holding, and that the procedure is applied only as long as necessary. If there is a possibility that the individual is experiencing distress or is at risk of injury during application of protective holding, staff will terminate protective holding immediately.
