In order to purchase a Tree Guard Project Kit, which includes all hardware and materials custom cut to your tree bed measurements, you must first secure a Tree Work Permit from the New York City Parks Department. Tree work, including installation of a tree guard, without a permit is illegal and may result in fines. We have made this process easier by providing a vetted architectural drawing of our tree guard design. Follow our instructions and you should receive your permit within 30 days.
Our Permit Application Guide covers how to:
- Identify a tree in the pilot catchment area (excludes historic districts)
- Find your tree ID on the NYC Tree Map
- Take three pictures of your tree bed
- Measure your tree bed
- Upload our vetted tree guard architectural drawing
- Apply for a Permit and Upload All Docs

NOTE: You should not install a tree guard in a tree bed unless there is a minimum of one and a half feet clearance around the tree on all sides from the trunk to the concrete. If the roots and trunk of the tree are bound and crowded by pavers, cobbles and/or concrete, the tree bed must be expanded first before a tree guard could be installed.
