Our church has spent a while praying and asking the Lord if we are called to move into helping with the asylees in our community. As of this moment, it looks as though there are four well-sized encampments in South King County:
a. Riverton Park United Methodist
b. Double Tree Hotel in Sea Tac
c. Quality Inn in Kent
d. The encampment next to the Econo Lodge in Kent
In observing and speaking with some of the asylum seekers, it appears that a primary need right now is productive things to do. One clear possibility is facilitating ELL classes. In facilitating ELL classes, we will need conversation partners as well as people to help work through the work that is given. It would also be a dream if some people might be willing to help any children who come along. In that space, the attention would be less on ELL teaching, and more on childcare. (For a more detailed explanation view this clip from last Sunday's service)
But, we can’t do this alone! We need at least 5 people to be able to do this effectively. Please answer the questions below to help us get a better idea of whether or not we can move ahead with offering these classes.
