Feed your Mind: Heirloom Vegetables with Marlena Chieffo August 20th 12-1 pm

Description: Farmers and gardeners have grown heirloom vegetables over generations cultivating them for flavor, nutrients, cultural heritage and genetic diversity. Today we’re losing many of these amazing local varieties to plants whose sole advantage is their easy cultivation on a larger scale. In this lunchtime workshop, we’ll explore the benefits of growing heirloom vegetables, saving seeds and comparing different varieties. We'll also taste test different heirloom vegetables and visit the Heritage vegetable garden.
Audience Target: Adults interested in growing, tasting, or understanding Heirloom Vegetables
Format: An introduction to heirloom vegetables, including a tasting and a Q&A.

Fall Gardening with Allen West - Sept. 26th
Description: Just because the summer is ending doesn't mean that fresh veggies from the garden have to. Participants in this class will leave with lots of information, seeds and plants to start, manage and harvest their very own fall vegetable gardens.
Audience Target: Anyone who is interested in gardening or learning about growing vegetables

About the Presenter: Allen was born and raised in the Clement community of Sampson County, graduating from Midway High School. He went on to receive his Bachelors and Masters of in Agriculture Education, with a minor in Horticulture from NC State University. He taught High School Agriculture and served as a FFA Advisor for 14 years. He taught 6 of those at Cape Fear High School here in Cumberland County where he served as the school’s Agriculture Academy Director.
He currently serves as the Consumer Horticulture Extension Agent for Cumberland County. He is married to his wife Amy of 24 years and has two teenage sons, Ben and Brady. Allen likes to read, write, serve in his church and piddle in his garden and greenhouse.

Description: Join us for an engaging session on the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW), where we'll delve into the intricate ecology of the RCW, exploring its family dynamics, fascinating behaviors, and the dedicated local initiatives aimed at restoring this species from near extinction. Additionally, we will uncover the rich history of the Longleaf Pine ecosystem and its symbiotic relationship with fire, crucial for maintaining the habitat essential for the survival of the RCW.

Description: The Cape Fear River runs through the heart of Fayetteville and our Botanical Garden. As we approach America's 250th anniversary, come learn the story of this amazing river and its role in the history of America, the founding of the city, the civil war, economic trade, and the development of this entire region. Experience expert historical storytelling and impressive preserved artifacts that bring history to life. This event is held in collaboration with the Fayetteville History Museum.
