• Right to Write Award Application

  • Anyone applying for this award must also complete the general application for Monthly Mentorship and be accepted into the program. It’s perfectly acceptable to turn in both applications simultaneously.

    Before proceeding with the Right to Write Award application, we encourage all applicants to do the following:

    • Review The Breakdown section and FAQ at monthlymentorship.org to ensure you understand the weekly breakdown of the program, pricing, scholarship information, and the details about our Faculty's unique pedegogical approach.
    • Review this entire application as well as the requirements for your writing sample prior to beginning to complete the application. 

    Some additional information about this application:

    • This form will allow you to draft and save your responses prior to submitting. Please keep in mind that saving your responses is not the same as submitting the form. You may also draft your responses in a separate document and copy and paste them into the form when you are ready to submit.
    • You may use the same writing sample on the Right to Write Award application and the Monthly Mentorship Questionnaire, but your file must remain anonymous, so please be sure to review the submission guidelines below.

    Recipients of the Right to Write Award must attend at least 80% of class meetings during the Award Semester—unless there is a verifiable hardship that prevents attendance. They must also complete all the Program assignments and follow our Community Guidelines and other Program terms and conditions.s.

    You will also be given the opportunity to share your bio, photo, and a few paragraphs of information about yourself and your writing throughout your year in Monthly Mentorship, granting permission to WRITEABILITY® and Maximum Impact to use that information for promotional purposes.

  • Please type your responses to the questions below. Be specific and take your time. Speak from the heart. Your replies will be deeply considered by Members of the WRITEABILITY guild, who will review your application anonymously. Your response to the essay questions matter more than any other aspect of this application.

  • Your Financial Need

  • This is, first and foremost, a merit-based award. However, in the event of two equally qualified applicants, financial need will be considered. Please provide an honest description of your finances below.

  • Your Writing Sample

    Please review the following guidelines for submitting your writing sample carefully.
  • Your writing sample should contain no more than 1 short story or essay per submission; or up to 3 flash fictions, flash nonfictions, or lyric essays. You may submitted multiple chapters from novels and memoirs are accepted, so long as they do not exceed the total page limit. You can submit the same sample that you used for your Monthly Mentorship application, but for your writing sample to remain anonymous, please following these guidelines:

    • Only include your first and last name in the name of the file. Example: {name}_writing_sample.docx
    • Your writing sample should be between 8 and 20 pages double-spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all sides
    • Include page numbers and the title of your piece(s) in the header of your document.
      • Do not include any other identifying information in the document. Your sample must remain anonymous.
    • The document can be in .doc, .docx, or PDF format and all pages should be in a single file
    • The first page of the document should include the title of your piece and the genre.
