  • Letter from our Rosh Machaneh 2024

  • Hello, Builder Lula here!

I am Rosh of the builders for 2024, aka Rosh Machaneh Bonim Beyachad. Over the past 6 months, I have been working with the Machaneh construction team to build Machaneh 2024 for our chaverim. We have been eagerly waiting to share our plan of action!

The name of our movement is HaBonim, meaning "the builders," and our Machaneh for 2024 is Bonim Beyachad. At Habonim, we value traditions and our value system, rooted in chalutzic aliyah and service to humanity. We have members who built kibbutzim and fought for the democracy South Africa is built on. As Habonimniks in 2024, we continue this tradition of being builders—confident, informed young thinkers and authentic individuals who enjoy life. Habonim builds people of conviction and action and leaders in all fields, especially in our Jewish, Zionist community.

Our carefully curated syllabi create thought-provoking peulot that nurture critical thinking, encourage out-of-the-box ideas, and provide spaces for constructive conversation. Our rigorous peulot on Zionism and Judaism allow members to explore their rich identities. Through this journey of understanding one's identity, heritage and traditions, Habonim builds thinkers and action-takers with strong Jewish and Zionist identities. Additionally, our multiple Shabbat services, shabbos day vibes, havdallah, and interactions with our Israeli cohort offer spaces to express our Jewish and Zionist identities on our idyllic campsite.

Our channichim are given chances to practice leadership on Habonim Machaneh. Shichvah-specific projects offer opportunities to take responsibility for large-scale initiatives and add their spin on or spice in it. Whether coordinating the building of the Burning Man structure, setting up the cheder ochal for the wedding or talent show, or taking care of garanim channichim for two days, our channichim learn practical leadership and planning skills. These projects highlight creativity and collective action.

Habonim Dror Southern Africa builds a community that nurtures the whole individual—mind, body, and soul—providing a home and a lifelong network. We support one another, share laughs, dance, and build better futures together. I know that we are all on the same page right now (literally and figuratively) about the Jewish people needing, now more than ever in the past 77 years, to stick together. As a South African Jew, I feel lucky to be part of such a strong, tight-knit community. As a community our priority is preserving our precious future.

Luckily, Habonim’s got us covered. Habonim Dror builds thinkers and doers concerned with impacting the future we will live in once we’re no longer youths. We build educators, people of chesed, and those who chalish for the 17-day camp in Onrus, away from their devices, having fun with their friends.

Habonim has afforded me many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and experiences, but this one is the cherry on top! Thank you for trusting us with your children. We are privileged to be able to build a machaneh for our chaverim with the right foundations, structures, quality material, project managers, blueprint, safety protocols and teams executing a concept down to the last detail.

    Aleh Ve’Hagshem

    With love

  • Shtilim Camp Dates

As a parent of a child in Grade 5 or Grade 6, please read the following carefully:

The Shtilim shichvah, our youngest age group, is made up of Grade 5s and 6s. In Addition to the normal 17 day camp experience offered to Ne'arim (the teens), this year we are offering a shortended 13 day camp to help our new and younger channichim ease into the camp environment. For garde 5s only we are also offering a 9 day option as well for the same reasons.

These shorter camps encourage many young channichim to come to camp for the first or second time, where they will undoubtedly have the most educationally vibrant, fun-filled few days of their lives. We acknowledge that generally kids at these ages might not be ready for the full machaneh experience.

Thus, the standard shtilim camp dates will be the 12th-25th of December 2024 for both grade 5s and 6s, with an additional offer of a 9 day option from the 12th-20th of December 2024.

The reason for this decision is two-fold:

The 9 day option is offered only to garde 5s because we have noticed the impact of too many channichim leaving early has on the wider shichvah. In order to preserve the educational and social quality of the Shtilim machaneh, we have decided to limit this option accordingly.

    Criteria for admission to Shtilim:

All applications will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. This is subject to attendance at previous Habonim machanot and/or events on a regular basis during the year.

Please note the following only if your child is in grade 5:

Should you wish to opt for the 9 day camp, this will be considered special travel and the alternative. We strongly encourage Shtilim channichim to attend the full duration of Shtilim camp, as we believe that it offers them a broader and more enriching experience.

In choosing which option works best for your child, remember that while it may seem like 5 more days is not that special, in reality it’s so much more: 5 more days means having nine more brilliant peulot with three happening per day, nine more delicious meals, as well as 22 and a half more hours of beach time. Furthermore, the last 5 days include migdal jumping, sports finals and mifkadiesh, our beautifully closing ceremony on the beach. The quality and value of these events are not to be underestimated in their importance to the greater machaneh experience.

Furthermore, economically speaking, we will be charging the same fee for both options as the operating costs (infrastructural and administrational) of machaneh remains the same.

Ultimately, we strongly encourage Shtilim channichim to attend the full 13 day camp for the above reasons.

If you still wish to opt for the 9 day option, please email travel@habo.org.za to request such special travel. You may continue with the sign up process and we will get back to you shortly! Please remember, this option is offered only to grade 5s.

  • MEDICAL INFORMATION

  • Medical Care on Machaneh

Habonim Dror Machaneh always provides an incredible holiday for all campers. This is a top priority for Habonim as we build a child-centric machaneh. Each child's physical, emotional and social needs are dealt with effectively by our experienced medical team.

A letter from the Camp Doctors:

    Dear Parents/Guardians, Channichim and Bogrim

The leadership of Habonim Dror has instituted a childcare resource facility at machaneh. In an unfamiliar environment, children may experience medical, social and emotional difficulties. To combat these problems, Habonim Dror provides the following free medical facilities and services on the campsite. This is all housed on site in Docsville, where a team of doctors, nurses, trained medics, psychologists, social workers and counsellors are immediately available 24 hours a day. If need be, specialists are on call in Hermanus, as are private and public hospitals in the area.

All madrichim are trained and supported by this same team of specialists before and during machaneh to handle any problems.

    Docsville is equipped with:
    - A 16 bed, modern hospital for sleep-over patients
    - A clinic with examination room, treatment facilities and well-stocked dispensary.

For us to take the best care of your child, we require honest and full completion of the medical forms (Parents, doctors and counsellors). Full disclosure is critical.  It is highly unlikely that your child will be rejected from machaneh on medical grounds.

Your child will have the best experience if we can support their needs. In the past, some parents have, in collusion with their doctors, omitted important medical information (e.g. ADHD, epilepsy), for fear that their child may not be accepted to camp. We have found that most medical conditions, if well controlled, can be managed well at machaneh. We, therefore, implore you to fill in the medical forms with utmost transparency.

Medical aid details and an indemnity form must be completed in full to facilitate referral.

    Please note:

    Off-site medical treament:

All off-site medical costs must be covered by any parents or medical aid. This includes X-rays, medication or consultations of any nature arranged at any outside (private or public) hospital.
Payment will be requested prior to Habonim making any purchase or payment on your behalf.
Before this occurs, Habonim will inform you of the situation and request your consent.
Receipts will be provided so that you may claim the expense from your medical aid.

    Medication:

Please make sure that any medication that is sent with your child comes with instructions for our madrichim as well as a letter from your doctor.

If your child is on chronic medication (for any medical condition), the prescribing doctor must notify us with the name of the drug, and the use instructions.
Ensure your child with sufficient maintenance medication such as painkillers, basic cold medicine and anything that will treat common ailments they might experience.
Asthma inhalers must be sent with your child and spares should be placed in the clinic for safeguarding. These will be returned at the end of machaneh.
Ritalin and other behavioural medication: For your child's sake and their enjoyment of the machaneh, continuing their medication is essential.  In the past, it has been extremely difficult for madrichim to manage channichim who have been taken off their long-term medication. Camp is an environment which requires concentration and good behaviour. This medication must be sent to the camp doctors or your child's Rosh Shichvah with a covering note from your doctor.

All participants require an up-to-date Tetanus vaccine before camp.
The medical team ensures that only trustworthy and reputable medication is used; however, often generics are more cost-effective. If you are not happy about the use of these generics, please ensure that you send an antibiotic or other suitable medication with your child. It is compulsory for your child to hand these to he doctors for safekeeping, preventing inappropriate self-dispensing.

    Psycho-social support:

If your child suffers from any psychological conditions and/or has previously seen a psychologist, please send an e-mail to psychologist@habo.org.za. This e-mail will go directly to our camp psychologists and will be kept strictly confidential. This will help us immensely when dealing with psychological difficulties at machaneh. Please make sure you include your child's name and shichvah
Should you have any questions or concerns, we are available for any discussion if necessary. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

    Yours sincerely,
    The Machaneh Medical Team

  • Has the applicant been diagnosed with or experienced any of the following to a significant degree:

  • Information about how to fill in medication

In order to effectively maintain the applicant's medical routine, it is essential that we are correctly and accurately informed of all medication (over-the-counter or non-prescription drugs) taken routinely. Please ensure that the applicant brings sufficient medication for the entire camp period and that it is supplied in the original packaging/bottle containing identification and dosage information.

We advise strongly that you provide double the sufficient amount of said medication for the camp period and that the applicant hands extra medication to the Camp Medical Team for safekeeping. Habonim and its medical volunteers will not be held responsible/liable for the incorrect dispensing of medication if it is not correctly noted herein. In the case of younger campers, medication should be passed onto the Roshim of shichavot for responsible dispensing.

    Please provide:

    • the name of the medication;
    • the correct dosage of the medication;
    • and the correct dispensing information below.

  • COUNSELLOR'S FORM

  • Dear Parents and Guardians,

Machaneh can sometimes be a challenging experience, especially for children who are vulnerable to psychological problems. Professional mental health professionals (including social workers, psychologists and trained counsellors) work as a team together with other support staff, such as the doctors, camp leadership, and madrichim to address any issues that may arise with children who are believed to be experiencing difficulties.

Children whom the madrichim believe require attention are discussed with or seen by members of the mental health support team  during Machaneh. No child is seen without the knowledge of their Rosh Shichvah (head of age group).

This systematic way of working necessitates the sharing of some confidential information, about which we are sensitive and exercise discretion. Under recent legislation, if a child is over 12 years of age, confidential information cannot be divulged without their consent, except in certain situations. Therefore, unless there are exceptions (e.g., in case of emergency), individuals over 12 years of age will only be seen by a counsellors/s upon completion of the following consent form, which will be given to them during Machaneh should they wish to visit the counsellor/s:

In order for us to provide your child with appropriate counselling should the need arise (and should your child agree to the above terms), please provide the following information. If necessary, please attach any further documentation that may be of use to us to the Doctor's Medical Form, which needs to be sent to Habonim's offices. All information is stored on a secure database which will be accessible only by the Rosh Machaneh and the psychologists/social workers.

Failure to provide accurate information in this regard may compromise your child's and others' enjoyment of camp and the delivery of appropriate counselling services.

Thank you for your time. Please note that we wish to ensure the best care for your child at all times. We will endeavor to make Habonim a comfortable and rewarding experience for every channich.

    Yours sincerely
    The Camp Councelling Team

    Special Travel:

If your child is planning on missing any part of machaneh, please read below:

You require permission for your child to leave the campsite during the course of machaneh.

If so, please email Daniel Rome on travel@habo.org.za with a detailed request.

Children leaving camp before its full duration can be very disruptive to the flow of the camp. It also often causes homesickness in the friends of campers who leave. Having said this, Habonim Dror acknowledges special circumstances where leaving camp early is unavoidable. As such, the Machaneh Va'ad Poel (Camp Steering Committee) will maintain a policy to ensure campers only leave early for reasons approved by Habonim leadership. The policy will be adhered to strictly, especially considering camp ends early enough in 2024 for additional local holidays with family and friends to be planned around Machaneh.

    1. The approved reasons to leave camp are: A family celebration. If this is the case, the camper will ask to leave for the celebration only and return on the next possible travel day.
    2. A pre-booked overseas family holiday/function. If this is the case, we ask you to send us a copy of your flight ticket.
    3. A competitive sport or cultural event. If this is the case, please provide a letter from the relevant teacher or coach.
    4. A medical procedure. If this is the case, please provide a doctor's letter.

For any other reasons, your special travel request will have to be discussed with Daniel Rome who may turn it down. The Machaneh Va'ad Poal may choose to make an exception for valid reasons. Habonim may arrange special transport for your children on specific days and at a standardised cost in conjunction with Daniel Rome.

    • NB: If your child is NOT travelling on Habonim transport TO or FROM machaneh (NOT using Habonim's transport), it is imperative that you request permission by specifying this 'Alternative Arrangement'.

  • Shalom Zamir!

At last you have reached Shomrim, the final stepping stone before becoming Bogrim - Graduates. Shomrim Machaneh is a unique and inspiring time with lots to look forward to: projects week, the talent show, graduation, amazing madrichim, friends and Mifkad Eish, to name just a few.

Shomrim Machaneh will be a time to relax, recline and socialise! However, Shomrim is also a time to engage with relevant issues in the world around us that affect our everyday lives. Shomrim is about committing to your shichvah and each other and building a community for three weeks. This means that Shomrim Machaneh is a time when we expect the Shomrim channichim to contribute to their machaneh and to be cooperative. By coming to machaneh, you are expected to behave like a future Boger of this movement. We want to create a positive atmosphere, where people treat each other and the Habonim ethos with respect and dignity. You are expected to abide by the regular camp rules, including compulsory peulot, coming on time to meals and activities and general cooperation with madrichim.

We must state clearly that we reserve the right to interview any applicant, or to turn any applicant away. For this reason, we would like to ask you to write a short motivation on why you would like to come to Shomrim Machaneh 2024. Take time to think about what it actually means to be a Shomrim channich/ah and what you want to get out of this machaneh.

Machaneh'24 Bonim Beyachad is well underway to becoming the best machaneh yet - your last one as channies! Make sure you can be a part of the power and strength that is HDSA.

  • Habonim Dror Assist a camper

  • THE ALEC ROGOFF

    ASSIST-A-CAMPER APPEAL

Habonim Dror Southern Africa is a Public Benefit Organization (PBO), registered under S18A. PBO number: 930 005 838

In honour of the late Alec Rogoff, a highly respected Durban communal leader and long-time chaver of Habonim Dror, we named our subsidy appeal the "Alec Rogoff Assist-A-Camper Appeal" in 2007. We wish to thank the Rogoff family and the Beare Foundation for their support of this fund, which has contributed significantly in assisting those children who cannot attend Habonim events during the year due to financial constraints.

Over the last 94 years, Habonim Dror has prided itself on not turning a child away due to financial constraints. Nevertheless, the awarding of subsidies unfortunately puts a severe strain on the movement's already limited financial resources. As the number of distressed families in our community continues to increase amidst the current economic climate, Habonim Dror has not been able to accept every child that requires assistance.

We subsidised over 30% of campers at Machanot since covid and it seems clear that this year the number of subsidy requests will increase once again. We estimate that we will need to raise in excess of R850 000 in order for these children to participate in this unforgettable and fulfilling experience.

No contribution is ever too small. If you are able to contribute through a donation please contact Melissa Bennun on 011 786 7046 or Joburg@habo.org.za

Or, if your child is attending machaneh you can add a donation amount below this text.

Alternatively you can EFT your donation into the following account:

  • MACHANEH MERCHANDISE

  • This year, the following machaneh merchandise is available. Please ensure that if you want to purchase any merchandise, you order this before camp (on the financial page of this form) as you will not be able to order it during or after camp:

    • Official Machaneh T-shirt - every camper will receive one free of charge
    • Habonim Dror Chultzah - the Habonim Dror uniform: blue shirt with red string; compulsory if you do not have one!
    • Habonim Dror 2024 Hoodie - Unique every year

    Tuckshop

We recommend R400 for each channich's individual tuckshop allowance. Money unspent by the end of camp will not be refunded, but donated to the Alec Rogoff Assist-A-Camper Appeal.

    Luggage Bags

These bags can hold a pillow, sleeping bag, sheet, stretcher and mattress, thus allowing campers to transport all of their sleeping things without having to worry about anything getting misplaced.

These bags cost R145 and can last you for many Machanot in the future: they are definitely not compulsory but are a nice and helpful addition to your camping luggage.

  • Hello Parents.

Here is the breakdown of the costs of each item.

    Chultzah: R195.00

    Camp hoodie: R385.00

    Luggage bag: R145.00

  • Any information you want us to be aware of regarding your children

  • We understand camp can be scary for parents as well. Sending your kids away for a few weeks is daunting for everyone. Rest assured our counsellors are ready to ensure your child is safe and having a wonderful time. If there is any information you think we should be aware of regarding your children such as politics in their friend group or any worries you may have please let us know here and the Head for the year will receive the information and ensure their counsellors will be equipped with the necessary information to run a meaningful machaneh.

    • Refund policy

    • Habonim Dror’s refund policy is as fellows:
If you request a refund before 15th November as your child is no longer able to attend Machaneh but you have already paid, you will receive 90% of your payment back. HDSA reserves 10% as an admin fee as we have been organising and planning to accommodate your child on our program. After 15th November, you will not be able to request a refund as we would have fully organised to accommodate your child on Machaneh. In the case of a personal or medical emergency happening during that period of time between the deadline and Machaneh starting, our board will assess the situation case by case.
