Terms and conditions
This is a designated group EE opportunity. In other words, our aim is to see the MTN/UJ Partnership’s strategic deliverable for Employment Equity (EE) youth development, successfully fulfilled, and will therefore be looking for the following set of criteria and qualities in the new young curator.
1. Should be a South African citizen no older than 35 years of age.
2. Should have a valid and operating Bank account in good standing.
3. Should be available from February 2025 until the end of May 2026 to be temporarily contracted by the UJ Art Gallery to manage the various deliverables of the two (2) phases of this project.
4. The above point will therefore require the curator to be adequately skilled in time -, project- and self-management.
5. Should be a graduate in a field related to curatorial practice, cultural theories, fine art and/or art history. A postgraduate qualification, such as an Honours or a Masters is recommended although not a prerequisite.
6. Should have at least one to three (1- 3) years of experience in curating, managing and installing exhibitions of contemporary work.
7. Should have an interest in, and knowledge of, contemporary South African artists that create work in new media, digital and virtual mediums and techniques.
8. Should be adequately skilled in liaison and communication, research and writing, documenting, reporting and archiving of information.
9. Should have a wide-ranged network of specialists in the contemporary South African art and curatorial field who will be able to provide the panel with assurances and references for the candidate.
10. The candidate should be willing to participate, and contribute towards, requests for various public-relations-and-communications-activities from both the UJ Art Gallery and the MTN Foundation and should therefore not harbour any prejudices towards acknowledging and crediting these institutions for their roles as sponsors and organisers of the project.
11. The candidate should be available for de-installation, liaison with artists and facilitating the return of their artworks.
12. The candidate should be available and open to the possibility of travelling the exhibition to other parts of South Africa.
13. Should be willing to enter into a legally binding contract, for at least 15 months, accepting of the expected deliverables once appointed.
