  • OSE Collective Bargaining Survey

We are hopeful to begin negotiations with the WWU Administration for a union contract that will define the important rights and protections that affect our working conditions. For our union, bargaining is a participatory, democratic process. Everyone’s voice is important! Please share your priorities and thoughts below, and share with your co-workers!
  • If you haven't yet filled out an OSE WAWU Authorization Card, please do so HERE.

  • For the second year in a row, our elected state representatives in Olympia killed the path to legal framework for Operational Student Employees (OSEs) to bargain a contract with WWU. However, in the face of impending budget cuts, OSEs cannot and will not wait another year for legislators who don't respect the work we do to decide that we deserve better protections for our jobs.

IT IS TIME FOR US TO SHOW WESTERN THAT WE NEED A CONTRACT BEFORE THE END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR.

The fastest way for OSEs to get a contract is to get the same protections as those afforded to Educational Student Employees (ESEs) in their contract (you can read the full thing HERE). Despite WWU Admin agreeing to these protections for ESEs, they have made it clear that they will not give OSEs equal protections without us all showing up and demanding it from them.

Below are summaries of what was negotiated by ESEs in their first contract with Western Admin over the course of 9 months last year. In many cases (since many OSE jobs are similar to those of ESE jobs), the articles in in the ESE contract offer protections for ANY student employee.

This OSE bargaining survey will be used not only to prove to WWU that a majority of us want the same protections afforded to ESEs, but also to see if there are any GLARING gaps in the ESE contract with regard to OSE specific protections that are needed ASAP. It will also give the OSE elected bargaining committee an idea of how much each of us are willing to fight for those specific protections ON TOP OF the ESE contract.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. PLEASE THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THE PROTECTIONS WON IN THE ESE CONTRACT ADEQUATELY COVER ANY OF YOUR IMMEDIATE WORKPLACE CONCERNS AND ISSUES.

    2. If they do not, please explain further how it is not adequate and what sort of additional protections WOULD adequately protect against your workplace issue.

    3. Then, please rank on a scale of 1-5 HOW MUCH YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO FIGHT TO GET THESE OSE SPECIFIC ADDITIONAL PROTECTIONS BEFORE THE END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR.
