Acceptable Use Guidelines
1. Users are responsible for their account(s). Users should make appropriate use of the system and network-provided protection features and take precautions against others obtaining access to their computer resources. Individual password security is the responsibility of each user.

Kamehameha Schools (KS) strives to provide activities in safe learning environments that minimize potential dangers. However, there are certain inherent risks associated with every activity. These activities may include, but are not limited to, environmental clean-up activities, building pā pōhaku, hiking, swimming invasive eradication, gathering and native habitat restoration, ‘āina-based learning activities in ocean, ponds, stream, or other water sites, and canoe activities. If you determine that you and/or your child is able to participate in the activities and determine for either yourself(ves) and/or your child the risks associated with the activities are acceptable to you, complete this form and return it to Ka ʻUmeke

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides parent(s)/guardian(s) of Hawaii public school students, the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teacher(s) and if the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so their qualifications. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teacher(s) and paraprofessional(s) and requires us to give
you this information in a timely manner upon request. You have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teacher(s).

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT/PARTNERSHIP
In setting expectations and creating a climate conducive to effective engagement/partnership implementation, the Board acknowledges the importance of administrative leadership at all levels, including its own. Therefore, the Board directs the Department to establish an organizational culture characterized by practices and programs that build and sustain positive and engaged relationships with families and communities by:

Building the capacity of staff and families to engage in partnerships;

Aligning with school achievement goals and connecting families to the teaching and

Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)
Hawaiian Immersion Public Charter School

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Parents/Guardians:

In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) mandated the Asbestos-Containing Materials in Schools Rule, 40 CFR Pert 763, which requires all primary and secondary school buildings to be inspected by AHERA accredited inspectors and to identify all asbestos containing building materials. The rule further requires the development of a management plan by AHERA accredited management planner that is based on the findings of the inspection. The management plan outlines our intent in controlling the potential for exposure to asbestos fibers in our school.

In February 2001, the Hawai'i State Legislature adopted Hawai'i Administrative Rules Chapter 11-502. These rules essentially mirror the requirements of AHERA regulations. In both cases, the rule requires our school to notify parents, teachers, and employees of the presence and status of asbestos-containing material in our school buildings.

The initial inspection of our school was conducted a number of years ago and identifies some asbestos-containing materials. Since that time, we continue to conduct periodic surveillances and re-inspections to ensure that the asbestos-containing materials remain in good condition and do not pose a hazard to our students and staff.

An asbestos management plan was drafted based on our initial inspection and submitted to the Hawai'i State Department of Health. It outlines in detail the methods we will use to maintain the material in a safe manner. The management plan is updated regularly as asbestos is removed or conditions change.

A copy of the management plan is on file in the business office and available for your review during regular school hours.

This compact outlines how the ʻohana, kumu, staff, and haumāna will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo and ʻohana will build and develop a partnership that will help every haumāna to achieve academically.

This school-parent compact is in effect during the school year and is required by all school programs participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Ka ‘Umeke Kāʻeo Educational Vision Statement

Ka ‘Umeke Kāʻeo is a Hawaiian language immersion pre K-12, learning community, where haumāna and their families are safe, nurtured, and challenged. Utilizing Keau kaha as our learning laboratory, haumāna develop environmental literacy skills and a deep connection and understanding of place that will allow them to enrich their communities and take positions of responsibility beyond the boundaries of the school. All members of Ka ‘Umeke Kāʻeoʻs learning ‘ohana are seen as contributing to the success of our haumāna.

Our academically challenging curriculum is aligned with common core standards and centered on a culture of Native Hawaiian language, knowledge, and the Papakū Makawalu methodology. Kumu work collaboratively to ensure a school wide curriculum that promotes an environment of inquiry, communication, collaboration, sustainable innovation, and advances in individual and collective learning.

Instruction at Ka ‘Umeke Kāʻeo is interdisciplinary with science and the natural environment leading content area studies. Haumāna investigate and analyze environmental issues developing critical thinking skills through observation, problem solving, and reflection. Kumu facilitate haumāna access and use of ancient and modern technologies, allowing them to analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and create new knowledge.

Haumāna at Ka ‘Umeke Kāʻeo are expected to listen and communicate effectively in Hawaiian and English. Through use of systems thinking and reasoning haumāna will demonstrate an ability to address challenges and make effective judgments and decisions. To support these processes haumāna will be adept at the application and use of technology to access and manage information. With these skills haumāna will be prepared for post secondary educational success. Assessments are a Hawaiian cultural norm. Ka ‘Umeke Kāʻeo utilize various types of assessments allowing us to collect valuable data that informs instructional, programmatic, and operational decision-making for continuous school improvement.
