About the Latino Coordinating Center

The Latino Coordinating Center for a Tobacco-Free California (LCC) is a project of California Health Collaborative in partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) and funded by the California Department of Public Health, California Tobacco Prevention Program (CTPP). The overall mission of the LCC is to "improve the health of Latino communities throughout California by facilitating the adoption and implementation of policies and system changes that reduce tobacco-related disparities."

LCC Internship Program

The Latino Coordinating Center’s (LCC) Internship Program is a public service leadership and development program that provides emerging public health professionals with an opportunity to gain valuable skills while supporting the work of the LCC and its mission to reduce tobacco-related disparities among Latino communities throughout California. All internships will be hosted remotely (virtually) with optional opportunities for in-person events and activities. The internship is a four (4) month commitment in which interns will receive monthly stipends of $250 for a total of $1000 for completing a minimum of 5 hours per week and assigned responsibilities.

Internship Responsibilities

Internship responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

• Reviewing, translating and/or developing educational materials (e.g., factsheets, social media posts, etc.) that are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
• Participating in virtual presentations and/or webinars to local and statewide partners regarding relevant tobacco-related issues.
• Assisting program staff with developing and maintaining strong relationships with non-traditional partners including community based organizations and university personnel.
• Assisting with reviewing and updating the LCC Policy Platform that supports policy and system change priorities for reducing and ending tobacco use among Latinos.
• Assisting with reviewing and implementing the LCC Leadership Development Program to build capacity among community members and tobacco control advocates.
• Participating in educational meetings with elected officials to inform/educate officials on tobacco related issues affecting Latinos in their jurisdiction.
• Participating in local and statewide meetings with tobacco control partners and non-traditional partners.
• Assisting LCC program staff with evaluation-related activities.

Internship Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible to participate in the internship, applicant must be enrolled in a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in California. Students must be majoring and/or have a strong interest in public health, public health administration, community health, health science, or related majors. Students must have completed a minimum of 60 semester or 90 quarter units (equivalent to junior grade level standing). Graduate students can also apply. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted for verification. Experience working with the Latino community and fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred but not required.

 Interns are required to:

• Commit to the full duration of the internship which will begin Monday, September 2, 2024 through December 20, 2024, for a total of four months.
• Commit a minimum of 5 hours per week to the internship and complete assigned responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Have a stable internet connection and access to a computer and/or laptop with functional camera and microphone.
• Work remotely efficiently with limited supervision.
• Participate in required bi-weekly videoconference meetings with their internship supervisor and communicate regularly with program staff.
• Accurately complete and submit a monthly time log to their internship supervisor that indicates the hours worked and responsibilities completed.

The deadline to apply is Friday, August 23, 2024. Applicants who are identified as strong candidates will be scheduled for an interview between August 27 to August 30, 2023. Selected applicants will begin the internship on Monday, September 2, 2024.

No units or credits are provided at the completion of this internship. This internship cannot be combined with an existing university/college sponsored internship or class.
