    The Nia Award recognizes an outstanding Black choral conductor/educator in the early stages of their musical career. They show great promise and potential to significantly contribute to the performance and study of music of the African Diaspora. They have an emerging record of transformative musicing and teaching for their students and singers. They exhibit a lifelong love of learning and are receptive to mentorship. A committee will choose the finalists and sole recipient of this award; nominations, including self-nominations, will be accepted.
  • Nomination Requirements: Nominees for the BBNB Nia Award shall meet the following requirements:

    • Black or of African descent.
    • Early in their vocal music education or choral conducting career (3-6 years).
    • Demonstrate promise and potential to significantly contribute to the performance and/or study of music of the African Diaspora. 
    • Demonstrate interest and ability to present at conferences and/or lead honor choir ensembles. 
    • Demonstrate interest in mentorship and love of lifelong learning opportunities.
    • Demonstrate that they actively use the music of the African/Black Diaspora as a force for good in their work or community.
