Application to serve on the Board of Trustees of Al‑Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.

  • I. Attestation

  • In applying to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., I agree that I meet the following minimum requirements:

    • I am an active member of Al‑Anon and have service experience beyond the group level such as a District Representative, Area Delegate, Assembly Officer or Coordinator, or AIS Liaison to the AWSC.
    • I have ten years of continuous Al‑Anon and/or Alateen membership (Alateen membership does count!).
    • I possess an understanding of the Twelve Traditions and the Twelve Concepts of Service.
    • I possess a broad view of the policies of Al‑Anon Family Groups.
    • I have never been a member of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.).
    • I am eligible to become an Al‑Anon Member Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS), including passing a national background check.
    • I am competent using productivity software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; can comfortably communicate using email, including opening attachments; and am skilled at accessing and navigating websites.
    • I speak and write proficiently in the English language.
    • If I served as a Delegate to the World Service Conference, I have waited two full years after my term ended in December before applying to serve as a Trustee. (This wait ensures Delegates serving on the Regional Committees on Trustees and/or the Conference Committee on Trustees reviewing applications have not served at Conference with applicants.)
    • If I am applying as a Regional Trustee, I reside within the Region from which I am nominated and acknowledge that my application is subject to approval through the Area process.

  • I understand serving as a Trustee requires more than just a “willingness to serve” and, if elected, I agree to:

    • Relinquish all Al‑Anon service positions beyond the group level during term of service.
    • Continue to regularly attend Al-Anon meetings.
    • Complete steps necessary to be certified in accordance with the WSO AMIAS Certification Program and, if interested in serving Alateen groups locally, will also complete my Area’s process to become certified to serve Alateen.
    • Respond to Board of Trustee emails within 24 hours.
    • Devote sufficient time—an average of seven hours a week increasing to 11 hours during the weeks before a Board meeting—between Board meetings to complete all Board assignments to Task Force, Committee, and Work Group projects in a timely manner.
    • Participate individually or as part of a team via web conference, email, or phone between Board meetings.
    • Attend meetings of the Board of Trustees on a quarterly basis (i.e., January, April, July, and October), travelling when necessary and committing an average of 16-20 days (about 3-4 weeks) of time a year.
    • Consider sharing a room with another Trustee as assigned by the Chairperson of the Board. Sharing is preferable but not required.
    • Be available to the WSO on short notice to attend special meetings of the Board of Trustees.
    • Be willing to travel anywhere in the world on behalf of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. independently without accommodation.
    • Be willing to speak to large groups, both inside and outside of Al-Anon Family Groups.
    • Support the AFG, Inc. Strategic Plan.
    • Support the Board’s group conscience decisions, regardless of my personal opinions.
